Additional Information
Assessment I:
Assessment II:
Assessment III:
Design Project:
Academic Calendar:
WS begins 20.11.11
SS begins 26.01.12
Study programme structure:
3 years Bachelor
1 year practical work
2 years Bachelor (in the case of Newcastle awarded with a BA degree)
1/2 year Master (Full-/Part-time)
The first as well as the second cycle of the bachelor programmes are rigorously structured.
Classes are very small and there are few optional courses students can take. All students in the
same year work on the same design project. It is possible to make a concentration in the Bachelor
of Architecture (BArch) in which a specific combination of courses must be taken. An M.Sc. in Town
Planning and an M.Sc. in Digital Architecture are offered as consecutive master programmes.
Should one wish to graduate with one of these qualifications, one can take the suggested optional
courses during the BArch programme.
Other affiliated courses:
Faculty of Architecture | RWTH Aachen
Compatibility Study 2010/2011
BA: - 20 Credits - Dissertation in architectural studies, assignment
BArch: - 30 Credits - Optional module: urban design / computer visualisation / assignment
Other affiliated courses in 2 x 30 Credits modules are offered for semesters take abroad.
Optionally, semesters 1 or 2 in the fourth year.
In the Bachelor programme
Year 1
At the beginning of the study programme there a series of small design projects (introduction to
design)
Year 2
Semester 1: Studio with a theoretical and critical architectural focus
Semester 2: Studio with focus on urban design
Year 3
Semester 1: Analyse of a building, theoretical work in construction, analyses and design
Semester 2: Final design project
In the Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) programme
The studio design studio is offered as a block over the course of 2 semesters and acts as a
preparation for the thesis. It is made up of numerous small components and (for Erasmus students)
can only be taken for the duration of one semester. The urban design component from semester
1 does not compare, by far, to the scope and complexity to the urban design studios in Aachen.
Rather, it is a theoretical examination of a practical aspect.
Component 1_Analysis in urban design. Collaboration with first year students.
Component 2_Development of an urban design strategy for a chosen area of the city.
Component 3_High-rise building design and written reflection.
The third part makes up 50% of the entire Module.
The design process is structured similarly to that in Aachen. There are weekly advising sessions
and colloquia. Normally there is additional written feedback.
Thesis Design Project:
The project occupies the entire 2nd year and cannot be subdivided. It encompasses an
independently chosen design project and an accompanying written work. The work is completed
independently, but advising is provided by professes and assistants.
