The Politechnika Gdanksa offers a wide of range of courses with concentrations in, for example
acoustics or transportation planning. All courses are required to be taken as part of the
curriculum. It is not possible for students to choose their own study concentration.
The study programme is divided into 7 Bachelor semesters and 3 Master semesters with
30 Credits per semester. That is: one supervised Credit hour is equal to one credit. If one
unsupervised credit is added for each supervised Credit hour, a workload of 30 hours per Credit
emerges – as is the European requirement. In the Bachelor as well as the master all courses are
binding.

At the Politechnika the design studios are conceived differently than is typical elsewhere in Europe.
Each student is assigned a group in which he/she remains for five years. For this reason design
studios cannot be chosen by the students.
Per year there are five to six groups, where each group contains roughly 15 – 20 students. Every
year, up until the diploma, the design studios grow in complexity.
Two designs are completed per semester, for example one high-rise and one urban design studio,
where each project is worth 6 Credits.
The students work on their designs at the university (attendance is compulsory). Here advising and
supervision also takes place (group advising). Advising sessions can take up to five hours. Not all
students can always be advised, but the possibility for insight into other student’s work leads to a
high level of exchange and discussion among the students.
Working spaces are not offered. Most of the students additionally also work at home. Furthermore
the university offers a large hall in which the students can work, build models and/or draw.
There are 2 or 3 colloquia per semester at which attendance is required.
