The Faculty holds the eighth place in the CENSIS Servizi s. p. a. 2009 (Italian university ranking).
In this ranking 22 universities were examined according to their didactic quality, productivity, research
and internationality.
There are about 150 students enrolled in each year. Per year 25 students can take a concentration
in architecture - archaeology.
As a whole, the Faculty focuses on a classic archaeological education.
The foundation subjects (mathematics and physics) are taught at the Polytechnikum and classes
are taken together with engineering students. Accordingly these courses are very demanding.
Instead of an internship, students are required to take an excursion to Greece and Sicily. Students
are required to attend all courses.
Since the academic year 2005/06 the Faculty offers parallel to the programme “Indirizzo generale”
a further programme entitled “Indirizzo classico” which, defined by its 19th century tradition, stands
alone amongst other study programmes.
Other affiliated courses:
Sociologia Urbana + Economia Urbana (11 Credits).
In the context of these 11 credits, three examinations must be completed.
These can be chosen from the following subjects:
Design instruction, history of construction, historic building preservation, structures, building
construction, urban design, construction cost calculation, design (CAAD, art and graphic design),
technical construction, Sociologia dell´Ambiente e del Territorio (30 Credits)
Internship (6 Credits)
Required electives (30 Credits) – only foundation courses in history:
Storia dell’architettura greca,
Storia dell’architettura romana,
Storia dell’architettura islamica,
Storia dell’architettura moderna in pietra da taglio
The here analysed examinations of the “Indirizzo Generale“ are partly also offered within the study
programme of the “Indirizzo Classico”.
There are approximately 50 students per design studio!
The design studios have a theoretical part (lecture) and a practical part, both are required.
The students must be present in the working spaces for eight hours a week. In this time the
assigned professor as well as numerous assistants are present and offer student consultations.
The projects are sub-divided as follows:
Year 1 – single family dwelling
Year 2 – building complex with public space design
Year 3 – public building
Year 4 – urban design master plan and detailing
Year 5 – final project / diploma
Groups of six students are assigned a study theme and a working space. The project lasts for a
period of one year and is completed by the group. Students may choose their own subject. This
depends on the focus of the professor’s work at the time. The subject of the design studio is
generally connected to the professor’s current projects.
