The programme is five years long. In contrast to the Spanish universities, Lisbon makes use of the
credits/ECTS system - in total 300 Credits are required to graduate. Of these, 20 Credits must be
taken from the optional course offer.

A professor is not permitted to teach for more than ten years at the faculty.
There are two possibilities to author a final project or thesis:
a) a theoretical paper (comparable to the final thesis at the Faculty of Architecture in Aachen).
The paper may be written by a single student or may be co-authored together by a group of
students.
b) a design project agreed upon with the student.

At the Faculty of Architecture the following concentrations, among others, are offered:

Design teaching and advising occur on three days of the week. Theoretical work is spread
out among the two remaining days. Classes are taught exclusively by professes; there are no
assistants. On average there is one professor for approximately 30 students. The faculty is open
for students 24 hours a day.
In the first and second semester of the first two years, students must primarily solve constructive
problems.
In the first semester of the third year, a group urban design project is conducted. This is further
deepened in the second semester of the same year.
At the end of every year (when papers and projects are turned in) the students must also write a
theoretical paper which is to accompany their design projects. The design studio is always offered
for an entire year. The fourth year is an exception to this, in which the students design a public
building of their choice.
Often there is also the possibility to plan a multi-storey building, developed in a previous urban
design studio. This creates the opportunity to focus on the relationship between space and
aesthetics.
