The Haute École d’Architecture has a strong focus on cultural history and sociology and also offers
many courses related to urban design. Along side the master programme in architecture, a master
in urban design is also offered.
The university has a partnership with the „Institut d‘Urbanisme de Paris“.
The semesters are divided into four main themes: design, theory, praxis, and development. These
are again broken down into smaller courses that build upon each other.
Only a small selection of optional courses is available in theory as well as in advanced courses
and workshops.
The École d’Architecture has 1000 students with an average of one lecturer per 18 – 20 students.
800 students are enrolled in the architecture programme. Per year there are about 110 students
Each semester students enrol in one foreign language course of their choice. In the development
courses “Developpements” students have the opportunity to concentrate their studies on an area
of their choice. This is enabled through workshops, conferences and exchanges with other French
or European universities.

In the interdisciplinary courses, students together agree on a topic that will be explored throughout
the course. They can either work through a problem area which they have previously confronted in
their studies or choose an entirely new topic.
They also have the possibility to prepare for a continuation of their studies into the master programme,
by completing a design studio with a view towards the master programme.
In the second semester of the first year in the master programme, students begin work on their
„Memoire“(Thesis). Here they focus on a topic of their choice.
Year 1-5
Design studios are offered each semester. Students can choose from six design studios. The
duration of each studio is one semester.
Studio (7 sws/Semester hours per week):
Studio work with weekly consultations with one or more advisors. At the end of the semester the
designs are presented to a jury.
TD (3 sws): (Bachelor only):
Applied exercises with advising for a groups of each 20 students.
Lecture (2sws)
This lecture is attended by all students.
