Along with the ESTA programme in Madrid, the architecture program at the ESTA Sevilla is famous
because it offers the longest study programme in Spain.
Study programme structure:
Study programme 1: 2 years. After the first two years students may transfer to another study
concentration (usually to engineering).
Study programme 2: 3 years with a degree in “Architecture”
‘Numerus Clausus’ (Restricted Admission): Grade average of the past year was 7.09 (a 10 in the
Spanish system equates to a 1 in the German system).
The ratio of the Spanish Credits to ECTS Credits is 450/300.
As structural engineering does not exist as a profession in Spain, the degree “Architecture“ includes
the qualification of a structural engineer. For this reason subjects such as structures, building
technology and calculations (physics and mathematics) are key elements of the programme.

In order to develop the construction aspect of the design studio, construction III is taught together
with the design studio.
Composition is a theoretical subject concerning the aesthetics of architecture with practical
exercises intended to deepen the student’s understanding.

Due to the implementation of the Bologna system and changements of the existing study
programmes into Bachelor and Master, the ECTS- Credits of Assessment II do not match the listed

The optional courses are primarily focused on subjects dealing with design and representation:
- Optativas (Faculty’s own optional courses)
- Libre Configuracion (Faculty’s own optional courses)
- Language courses
- Optional courses in other faculties (not listed in A II)
- Actividades académicas /conferencias seminarios (not listed in A II)
Design studios for concrete construction (La Cátedra Blanca) are given together with the Spanish
company Cemex España. These are also offered at the universities of Barcelona, Madrid and
Valencia. Besides the design studios in concrete, conferences and meetings are also held. In
Sevilla this professorship is led by renowned architects.
The professorship Holcim (La Cátedra Holcim) specializes in sustainable development. The
subjects are interdisciplinary and are not only taken by students from the architecture faculty. Both
courses are not listed in the optional course offer.

In the first year there is only one design studio which is held during the summer semester. In all
other years the design studios are held during the entire course of the year.
Each week there are two group working sessions that last three or four hours. There are about
100 students in a group, which are advised by three professors. If necessary the group may also
be reduced in size (3 professors / 30 students).
Theory classes are offered at the beginning of every design studio. These are followed by advising
sessions, either in groups or individually. During these meetings students can work in group
meeting rooms; the rest of the time students work at home.
The final project includes the following aspects: design, construction, structural and installation
calculation, measurement and cost calculation.
