Now, I will pose <strong>the</strong> question: Have you recently operated a mimeograph<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>e?<br />

Mrs. Freed. No.<br />

Mr. Doyle. May I see that exhibit, please?<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Yes, sir.<br />

Mrs. Freed, I hand you a copy of a leaflet marked <strong>for</strong> identification<br />

as Freed Exhibit No. 3, which is entitled ''WESTCHESTER WOMEN<br />

FOR PEACE INVITE YOU TO A DISCUSSION OF CUBA.''<br />

Did you participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> preparation or duplication of that item<br />

<strong>for</strong> dissem<strong>in</strong>ation?<br />

Mrs. Freed. I did not.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Did you participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> arrangements made <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> affair to be held at <strong>the</strong> place noted, and <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> discussion to be<br />

held on <strong>the</strong> subject of Cuba?<br />

Mrs. Freed. I didn't participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> actual arrangements of this<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g, but at a meet<strong>in</strong>g we did have a general discussion about<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g such a meet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. You did participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> discussions relat<strong>in</strong>g to this<br />

subject, did you not?<br />

Mrs. Freed. General discussion, yes.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Did you also discuss this problem with A^Irs. Blanche<br />

Posner of <strong>the</strong> New York headquarters of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace,<br />

your parent organization?<br />

Mrs. Freed. Shall I read this aga<strong>in</strong>?<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. You may say "<strong>the</strong> same reply," if you wish.<br />

Mrs. Freed. I question-—<strong>the</strong> same reply as previously <strong>in</strong>dicated.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Mrs. Freed, I hand you a photostatic copy of <strong>the</strong><br />

Independent Nom<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g Petition-—<strong>Communist</strong> Party <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1941<br />

election, marked <strong>for</strong> identification as Freed Exhibit No. 4, upon which<br />

it appears that an Iris Schwartz of 659 Pennsylvania Avenue, Brooklyn,<br />

N.Y., signed that petition <strong>in</strong> support of <strong>the</strong> candidacy of well-known<br />

<strong>Communist</strong> functionaries, particularly named as Israel Amter, Elizabeth<br />

Gurley Flynn, and James W. Ford, who sought respectively <strong>the</strong><br />

offices of Mayor, Comptroller, and President of <strong>the</strong> Council of <strong>the</strong><br />

City of New York.<br />

Are you <strong>the</strong> Iris Schwartz who executed that petition on September<br />

15, 1941?<br />

Mrs. Freed. I stand on <strong>the</strong> statement I previously made.<br />
