<strong>the</strong> official organ of <strong>the</strong> American Student Union?<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. I have no fur<strong>the</strong>r questions after her response to <strong>the</strong><br />

last, and we would respectfully request an answer to it.<br />

Mr. Doyle. Are you ready. Counsel?<br />

Mr. Nittle. Yes, sir.<br />

Did you, under <strong>the</strong> name Anna DeCormis and as editor of <strong>the</strong><br />

Vassar Miscellany News, contribute an article or articles to a magaz<strong>in</strong>e<br />

entitled Student Advocate, which was <strong>the</strong> official organ of <strong>the</strong><br />

American Student Union?<br />

Mrs. Mackenzie. I dechne to answer on <strong>the</strong> ground previously<br />

stated.<br />

I had a right to write <strong>for</strong> whatever publication I chose, if I did write.<br />

Mr. Doyle. What, Mr. Nittle, was <strong>the</strong> Student Union?<br />

Mr. Nittle. The American Student Union was a <strong>Communist</strong> front<br />

organized some years ago, and one of its <strong>activities</strong> was to participate<br />

at that time <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>peace</strong> <strong>movement</strong>s <strong>the</strong>n <strong>in</strong>itiated and emphasized<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Stal<strong>in</strong> period.<br />

Investigations have established that <strong>the</strong> American Student Union<br />

was one of <strong>the</strong> organizations estabhshed by <strong>the</strong> Cornmunist Party to<br />

conduct <strong>peace</strong> agitation and cont<strong>in</strong>ued to exist dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> period of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Hitler-Stal<strong>in</strong> Pact.<br />

Mr. Doyle. And it was about those organizations that you made<br />

<strong>in</strong>quiry?<br />

Mr. Nittle. Yes, sir.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>r, Mr. Doyle, as I previously stated to <strong>the</strong> witness, <strong>the</strong> American<br />

Student Union was created by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Communist</strong> Party to w<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

masses of student youth generally to <strong>the</strong> objectives of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Communist</strong><br />

Party. It was extremely active immediately preced<strong>in</strong>g World War<br />

II and particularly active <strong>in</strong> engag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>peace</strong> agitation, seek<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

prevent <strong>the</strong> participation of <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> war aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

Nazi Germany at a time when <strong>the</strong> Hitler-StaHn Pact was <strong>in</strong> existence,<br />

from 1939 to 1941.<br />

Mrs. Mackenzie. I left college <strong>in</strong> 1937. I don't see <strong>the</strong> relevancy<br />

of any of this, Mr. Doyle.<br />

Mr. Doyle. Any o<strong>the</strong>r questions, Mr. Nittle?<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. No, sir. The staff <strong>in</strong>terrogation is concluded.<br />
