COMMUNIST ACTIVITIES IN THE PEACE MOVEMENT 2161<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. I specifically po<strong>in</strong>t out to you <strong>in</strong> Exhibit No. 2 that <strong>the</strong><br />

sponsor<strong>in</strong>g group is noted as <strong>the</strong> Conference of Greater New York<br />

Peace Groups, "100 Days <strong>for</strong> Peace." What is <strong>the</strong> significance of<br />

that addition of "100 Days <strong>for</strong> Peace" follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> title of your<br />

organization?<br />

Mrs. Gross. My answer is <strong>the</strong> same as be<strong>for</strong>e.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. It is <strong>the</strong> committee's <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation that follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Senate <strong>in</strong>vestigation of <strong>Communist</strong> <strong>in</strong>filtration of <strong>the</strong> nuclear test ban<br />

<strong>movement</strong>, which closed <strong>in</strong> October 1960, Henry Abrams <strong>for</strong>med an<br />

organization called <strong>the</strong> Conference of Greater New York Peace Groups<br />

<strong>in</strong> November 1960 and that he assumed <strong>the</strong> position of chairman of<br />

<strong>the</strong> conference. It appears that this organization was established by<br />

Henry Abrams <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> purpose of provid<strong>in</strong>g a vehicle <strong>for</strong> <strong>peace</strong> agitation<br />

by persons expelled from chapters of SANE <strong>in</strong> its ef<strong>for</strong>ts to elim<strong>in</strong>ate<br />

<strong>Communist</strong>s from its ranks. Immediately after it was <strong>for</strong>med,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Conference of Greater New York Peace Groups—beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

January 21, 1961—staged "100 Days <strong>for</strong> Peace" agitation of various<br />

k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>in</strong> New York City under <strong>the</strong> sponsorship of a 100 Days <strong>for</strong><br />

Peace Committee—<strong>for</strong> which Henry Abrams, by <strong>the</strong> way, served as<br />

spokesman.<br />

Is this a correct explanation of <strong>the</strong> use of <strong>the</strong> phrase "100 Days<br />

<strong>for</strong> Peace" <strong>in</strong> Exhibit No. 2.<br />

Mrs. Gross. My answer is <strong>the</strong> same as be<strong>for</strong>e.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Have you not also been selected as <strong>the</strong> cochairman<br />

of <strong>the</strong> West Side Peace Committee?<br />

Mrs. Gross. My answer is <strong>the</strong> same as be<strong>for</strong>e.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. The committee's <strong>in</strong>vestigation reveals that you were<br />

<strong>in</strong> fact selected as <strong>the</strong> cochairman of <strong>the</strong> West Side Peace Committee.<br />

There<strong>for</strong>e I ask, Are you presently serv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> that capacity?<br />

Mrs. Gross. My answer is <strong>the</strong> same as be<strong>for</strong>e.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. It is <strong>the</strong> committee's <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation that <strong>the</strong> West<br />

Side Peace Committee was <strong>for</strong>med on or about February 1961, follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> expulsion of Henry Abrams from SANE <strong>in</strong> January 1961.<br />

Was not <strong>the</strong> West Side Peace Committee <strong>for</strong>med on or about February<br />

1961?<br />

Mrs. Gross. My answer is <strong>the</strong> same as be<strong>for</strong>e.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Committee <strong>in</strong>vestigation discloses that <strong>the</strong> West Side<br />

Peace Committee was established as a neighborhood group or action<br />

committee <strong>in</strong> support of <strong>the</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g organization known as <strong>the</strong><br />

Conference of Greater New York Peace, Groups. The function of <strong>the</strong><br />

Conference of Greater New York Peace Groups appears to be to<br />

<strong>in</strong>volve o<strong>the</strong>r organizations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> so-called <strong>peace</strong> <strong>movement</strong> and<br />

to coord<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong>ir activity on special projects.<br />

Was not <strong>the</strong> West Side Peace Committee established as a neighborhood<br />

group <strong>in</strong> support of <strong>the</strong> Conference of Greater New York Peace<br />

Groups?<br />

Mrs. Gross. My answer is <strong>the</strong> same as be<strong>for</strong>e.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. It is <strong>the</strong> committee's <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation that you, Ceil<br />

Gross, were appo<strong>in</strong>ted as a cochairman of <strong>the</strong> newly <strong>for</strong>med West<br />

Side Peace Committee and that you have been active <strong>in</strong> it s<strong>in</strong>ce its<br />

<strong>in</strong>ception.<br />

Is that not a correct statement of fact?<br />

Mrs. Gross. My answer is <strong>the</strong> same as be<strong>for</strong>e.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Our <strong>in</strong>vestigation fur<strong>the</strong>r discloses that your residence<br />

at 145 West 96th Street, Apartment lOA, New York City, telephone<br />

RI 9-0506, has been designated as <strong>the</strong> official address of <strong>the</strong> West<br />

Side Peace Committee.
