committee because "No one has ever been appo<strong>in</strong>ted to anyth<strong>in</strong>g" <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace. People do volunteer <strong>for</strong> jobs, she added.<br />

The witness said that she did not have any knowledge that Mrs.<br />

Re<strong>in</strong> had served as a volunteer on a committee to make a hst of<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational contacts <strong>for</strong> WSP.<br />

Mrs. Wilson testified that she had no knowledge that Mrs. Selma<br />

Re<strong>in</strong> had been identified as a member of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Communist</strong> Party.<br />

Committee counsel <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med her that Mrs. Re<strong>in</strong> had been so identified<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e this committee on December 13, 1955, by a <strong>for</strong>mer member<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Communist</strong> Party. When subpenaed to appear be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong><br />

committee on February 28, 1956, to expla<strong>in</strong> or deny her alleged<br />

membership <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Communist</strong> Party, Mrs. Re<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>voked <strong>the</strong> fifth<br />

amendment.<br />

Near <strong>the</strong> conclusion of her testimony, Mrs. Wilson was asked if<br />

she would know<strong>in</strong>gly permit or encom-age a <strong>Communist</strong> Party member<br />

to occupy a leadership position <strong>in</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace. She<br />

replied:<br />

Well, my dear sir, I have absolutely no way of controll<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

do not desire to control, who wishes to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> demonstrations<br />

and <strong>the</strong> ef<strong>for</strong>ts that <strong>the</strong> women strikers have made <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>peace</strong>.<br />

She was <strong>the</strong>n asked if she would know<strong>in</strong>gly permit or welcome<br />

Nazis or Fascists to occupy leadership positions <strong>in</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong><br />

Peace. She said:<br />

Whe<strong>the</strong>r we could get <strong>the</strong>m or not, I don't th<strong>in</strong>k we could.<br />

The committee counsel's f<strong>in</strong>al question to Mrs. Wilson—and her<br />

reply—were as follows:<br />

Counsel. Am I correct, <strong>the</strong>n, <strong>in</strong> assimi<strong>in</strong>g that you plan to<br />

take no action designed to prevent <strong>Communist</strong>s from assum<strong>in</strong>g<br />

positions of leadership <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>movement</strong> or to elim<strong>in</strong>ate<br />

<strong>Communist</strong>s who may have already obta<strong>in</strong>ed such positions?<br />

Mrs. Wilson. Certa<strong>in</strong>ly not.<br />
