The subcommittee of <strong>the</strong> Committee on Un-American Activities<br />

met, pursuant to call, at 10 a.m., <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caucus Room, Cannon<br />

House Office Build<strong>in</strong>g, Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C, Hon. Clyde Doyle (chairman<br />

of <strong>the</strong> subcommittee) presid<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Subcommittee members present: Representatives Clyde Doyle, of<br />

Cali<strong>for</strong>nia, and William M. Tuck, of Virg<strong>in</strong>ia.<br />

Staff members present: Francis J. McNamara, director; Frank S.<br />

Tavenner, Jr., general counsel; Alfred M. Nittle, counsel; and Raymond<br />

T. Coll<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>vestigator.<br />

Mr. Doyle. The subcommittee will please come to order.<br />

In view of <strong>the</strong> crowded condition of <strong>the</strong> hear<strong>in</strong>g room, I know we<br />

will all cooperate and accommodate ourselves to that fact <strong>in</strong> order that<br />

<strong>the</strong> committee may proceed promptly <strong>in</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mance of its duties.<br />

We are ask<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> utmost cooperation of everyone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hear<strong>in</strong>g room;<br />

I am sure we will have it.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> absence of hav<strong>in</strong>g it, of course, <strong>the</strong> committee will have to<br />

exercise its prerogative and obligation to see that <strong>the</strong> committee is<br />

not <strong>in</strong>terrupted <strong>in</strong> any manner <strong>in</strong> its official obhgations.<br />

Are you ready, Counsel?<br />

Mr. Nittle. Yes, sir.<br />

Mr. Doyle, Are you ready. Governor?<br />

Mr. Tuck. Yes, sir.<br />

Mr. Doyle. I might announce that today <strong>the</strong> subcommittee will<br />

consist of myself, Congressman Doyle of Cali<strong>for</strong>nia, and William<br />

Tuck of Virg<strong>in</strong>ia, <strong>for</strong>merly <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>guished Governor of that wonderful<br />

State. Mr. Bruce, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r member of <strong>the</strong> subcommittee, is not<br />

present this morn<strong>in</strong>g but will be <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon.<br />

Two of <strong>the</strong> three designated members of <strong>the</strong> subcommittee are<br />

present so <strong>the</strong>re is a quorum, and we wiU proceed.<br />

Be<strong>for</strong>e we hear <strong>the</strong> first witness, I have a prepared statement I<br />

wish to read, which will give to everyone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hearmg room an outl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

of what <strong>the</strong> objectives of <strong>the</strong>se hear<strong>in</strong>gs today are:<br />

Everyone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, every nation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world—if you can believe<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir words—wants <strong>peace</strong>. The cry is universal. It comes from<br />

neutrahsts, from <strong>Communist</strong>s, from anti-<strong>Communist</strong>s. Yet <strong>the</strong>re is<br />
