2096 COMMUNIST ACTIVITIES IN THE PEACE MOVEMENT<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Will you tell us <strong>the</strong> approximate date when you<br />

organized a group of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace?<br />

Mrs. Meyers. I don't th<strong>in</strong>k you understand what I said previously<br />

when you asked me that question. 1 did not organize <strong>the</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>for</strong><br />

Peace,<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Did you participate <strong>in</strong> its organization?<br />

Mrs. Meyers. I participated <strong>in</strong> <strong>activities</strong> and study with a group<br />

of women. At that time, when we were study<strong>in</strong>g and when we were<br />

talk<strong>in</strong>g and when we were com<strong>in</strong>g to a conclusion to participate fur<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

and <strong>in</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r communities, we did say that, as women who<br />

were <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>peace</strong> and called <strong>Women</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace, we were go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to do such and such.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Did you participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> creation of this local<br />

organization, <strong>Women</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace, <strong>in</strong> Long Island, <strong>for</strong> tlie purpose of<br />

send<strong>in</strong>g representatives to county groups who were act<strong>in</strong>g on behalf<br />

of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace of New York?<br />

Mrs. Meyers. If I have gone to otlier communities, it has never<br />

been as a representative <strong>for</strong> anyth<strong>in</strong>g except a po<strong>in</strong>t of view, and my<br />

own po<strong>in</strong>t of view. Usually, people went because <strong>the</strong>y were free <strong>for</strong><br />

time or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>the</strong>y felt particularly motivated on a particular<br />

program on which <strong>the</strong>y were talk<strong>in</strong>g or groups of people were<br />

talk<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Posner Exhibit No. 1, Structure <strong>for</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong><br />

Peace, Metropolitan New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, sets up<br />

a Central Coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g Committee, which appears to be <strong>the</strong> executive<br />

and policymak<strong>in</strong>g body of <strong>the</strong> group.<br />

Appo<strong>in</strong>tments to <strong>the</strong> Central Coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g Committee of <strong>the</strong> New<br />

York group of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace are accomplished <strong>in</strong> this way.<br />

Local groups of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace or <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace are set<br />

up <strong>in</strong> various communities, who are <strong>the</strong>n entitled to choose representatives<br />

to send to a county meet<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace,<br />

^^and 4he county meet<strong>in</strong>g selects representatives who represent tlie<br />

county group on <strong>the</strong> Central Coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g Committee.<br />

This group of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace, of which I th<strong>in</strong>k you state you are<br />

a participat<strong>in</strong>g member<br />

Mrs. Meyers. I participate when <strong>the</strong> action—when I am particularly<br />

motivated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> action and study<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. I did not ask what motivated you.<br />

you were a participat<strong>in</strong>g member. Would you please<br />

question?<br />

I asked if<br />

answer <strong>the</strong><br />

Mrs. Meyers. If an organization doesn't agree, <strong>in</strong> which you jo<strong>in</strong><br />

and unjo<strong>in</strong>, I don't see how I can answer <strong>the</strong> question of whe<strong>the</strong>r or<br />

not I am a member. When I am <strong>the</strong>re, I iim very anxious and excited<br />

about a particular program and a particular <strong>in</strong>terest that I have.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Would you please tell us approximately when your<br />

group was first organized?<br />

Mrs. Meyers. Can I tell you when I first became <strong>in</strong>terested?<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Yes, would you tell us that?<br />

Mrs. Meyers. Yes, I certa<strong>in</strong>ly will. I th<strong>in</strong>k it was October 31<br />

that we heard of <strong>the</strong> first Russian explosion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new nuclear tests<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Russians were start<strong>in</strong>g. At <strong>the</strong> time I was terribly disturbed<br />

because I had heard so much—I heard and read —<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. I am not <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> details of that. I simply<br />

asked you <strong>the</strong> date when you first met with <strong>Women</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace, and<br />

you stated October 31; did you not?<br />
