Mr. NiTTLE. Would you state your full name and residence, please?<br />

Miss Moos. Elizabeth Moos, 552 Riverside Drive, New York City.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Are you represented bj'^ counsel, Miss Moos?<br />

Miss Moos. I am.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Would counsel please identify himself <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> record?<br />

Mr. Taylor. Tel<strong>for</strong>d Tavlor, 400 Madison Avenue, New York<br />

Mr. DoYLE. May I <strong>in</strong>quire, were you <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hear<strong>in</strong>g room yesterday,<br />

Miss Moos, to hear this prelim<strong>in</strong>ary statement?<br />

Miss Moos. I was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hear<strong>in</strong>g room. I regret very much that<br />

that statement, however, was not repeated <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> benefit of those<br />

people who didn't hear it, because I believe that <strong>the</strong>y may not have a<br />

clear picture of what <strong>the</strong> committee is try<strong>in</strong>g to do.<br />

Mr. Doyle. Well, your dist<strong>in</strong>guished counsel was here and heard<br />

<strong>the</strong> statement read, and you heard it read, and that is why I wanted to<br />

make sure that you had.<br />

Miss Moos. I was here, j^es.<br />

Mr. Nittle. What is your marital status?<br />

I merely am <strong>in</strong>quir<strong>in</strong>g whe<strong>the</strong>r you are presently s<strong>in</strong>gle or married,<br />

that is all.<br />

Miss Moos. I am presently s<strong>in</strong>gle.<br />

Mr. Nittle. Would you state <strong>the</strong> date and place of your birth?<br />

Miss Moos. I was born on February 12—a good day, L<strong>in</strong>coln<br />

1890, <strong>in</strong> Chicago, 111.<br />

Mr. Nittle. Would you relate <strong>the</strong> extent of your <strong>for</strong>mal education?<br />

Miss Moos. I graduated from Smith College <strong>in</strong> 1911, with <strong>the</strong> usual<br />

A.B. degree. I <strong>the</strong>n went to Wellesley and took an advance education<br />

course <strong>in</strong> education and physical education. After some years, I<br />

went to Columbia and took graduate courses <strong>in</strong> anthropology. In<br />

1947^8, I entered Columbia University, where I received my M.A.<br />

<strong>in</strong> Slavic literature, and also <strong>the</strong> certificate of <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>for</strong> Russian<br />

Studies. Oh, and <strong>in</strong> addition, 3 years ago when I decided I wished<br />

to go back and get a little more firsthand <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation about present<br />

school education <strong>in</strong> this country, because that is my field, I took<br />

courses at Bank Street College <strong>in</strong> order to equip myself to work, and<br />

did so.<br />

Mr. Nittle. What is your present occupation?<br />

Miss Moos. I am retired.<br />

Mr. Nittle. You have not, however, completely abandoned all<br />

activity; have you?<br />

Miss Moos. At a time of history like this, I don't see how anyone<br />

can sit <strong>in</strong> a rock<strong>in</strong>g chair and knit. This is <strong>the</strong> time when we all<br />

ought to be active.<br />

Mr. Nittle. As a matter of fact, you have been active, have you<br />

not, <strong>in</strong> an organization known as <strong>the</strong> Metropolitan branch of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Women</strong>'s International League <strong>for</strong> Peace and Freedom?<br />

Miss Moos. I have worked with <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> what way I could <strong>in</strong> a<br />

very m<strong>in</strong>or capacity. I have never been an officer, I have never had<br />

any position which had anyth<strong>in</strong>g to do with plann<strong>in</strong>g, policymak<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

I have stuffed envelopes and I have gone to meet<strong>in</strong>gs. I have done<br />

aU <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>or little jobs that one can do.<br />
