COMMUNIST ACTIVITIES IN THE PEACE MOVEMENT 2189<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Yes. We shall probably go <strong>in</strong>to that. What is<br />

presently <strong>the</strong> correct name of your <strong>movement</strong>? I ask that because<br />

it has been variously designated <strong>in</strong> published reports as <strong>Women</strong><br />

<strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace, <strong>Women</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace, and <strong>Women</strong>'s International<br />

<strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace.<br />

Mrs. Wilson. Yes. In one area <strong>the</strong>y prefer to call <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

<strong>Women</strong> Stand <strong>for</strong> Peace, as a matter of fact. This aga<strong>in</strong> is most<br />

characteristic of <strong>the</strong> <strong>movement</strong>, that local groups have assumed<br />

names that <strong>the</strong>y prefer. Some ladies don't like <strong>the</strong> idea of strik<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

It sounds a little too violent <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, so, all right, <strong>the</strong>y can just be<br />

<strong>Women</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace or <strong>Women</strong> Stand <strong>for</strong> Peace. <strong>Women</strong>'s International<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Just a moment. You have <strong>in</strong>dicated that some<br />

groups of women <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country apparently do not f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> expression,<br />

"<strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace," very agreeable?<br />

Mrs. Wilson. That is right.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. In fact I believe you say <strong>the</strong>y f<strong>in</strong>d it ra<strong>the</strong>r distasteful?<br />

Mrs. Wilson. Yes.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. However, "<strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace" is <strong>the</strong> name<br />

which you orig<strong>in</strong>ally applied to <strong>the</strong> <strong>movement</strong>?<br />

Mrs. Wilson. No. You see, orig<strong>in</strong>ally we started out just to<br />

per<strong>for</strong>m one simple action. It was to be a demonstration at that<br />

time <strong>in</strong> support of <strong>the</strong> President's <strong>peace</strong> race, which he described at<br />

<strong>the</strong> United Nations, and we had to do someth<strong>in</strong>g that was different<br />

from any o<strong>the</strong>r gestm-es of this k<strong>in</strong>d that had been made, and it was<br />

grop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> a new word. You know <strong>the</strong>y had <strong>the</strong> sit-<strong>in</strong>s and <strong>the</strong><br />

walks and <strong>the</strong> rides and everyth<strong>in</strong>g else you could th<strong>in</strong>k of, and it<br />

took us quite a long time be<strong>for</strong>e this idea struck us, shall I say.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. I take it <strong>the</strong>n that <strong>the</strong> title of your <strong>movement</strong>,<br />

"<strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace," was not your conception, but was a title<br />

suggested to you by someone else?<br />

Mrs. Wilson. It was decided <strong>in</strong> a group of us who were discuss<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>peace</strong>.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. I th<strong>in</strong>k you might state whe<strong>the</strong>r you suggested <strong>the</strong><br />

title "<strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace," or whe<strong>the</strong>r it was suggested to you<br />

<strong>in</strong> that group.<br />

Mrs. Wilson. It was suggested to me <strong>in</strong> that group, but I responded<br />

<strong>in</strong>stantly.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. So that "<strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace" was <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

name of <strong>the</strong> <strong>movement</strong> <strong>the</strong>n at that po<strong>in</strong>t?<br />

Mrs. Wilson. It was really a description of <strong>the</strong> action that we were<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g to take on a certa<strong>in</strong> day.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Is it now <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> <strong>movement</strong>?<br />

Mrs. Wilson. Yes, it is generally accepted as <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>movement</strong>.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Has <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> <strong>movement</strong> been changed?<br />

Mrs. Wilson. Well, <strong>in</strong> a sense it has. On January <strong>the</strong> 15th of<br />

this year we decided that we would try to communicate with <strong>peace</strong><br />

groups <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r countries. We succeeded <strong>in</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g so and planned<br />

an <strong>in</strong>ternational action. From that day on we decided we were<br />

"<strong>Women</strong>'s International <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace." However, <strong>the</strong> titles of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>movement</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r countries are completely different. I mean<br />

this is a very loose affiliation really.
