2198 COISIMUNIST ACTIVITIES EST THE PEACE MOVEMENT<br />

Re<strong>in</strong> was appo<strong>in</strong>ted as a member of a committee of fom* to arrange a<br />

list of <strong>in</strong>ternational contacts to be made by <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace,<br />

that she was placed upon this group of four—<br />

Mrs. Wilson. Wait a m<strong>in</strong>ute. I have lost track,<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. All right. Let me put it this way. I stated that it<br />

is <strong>the</strong> committee's <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation also that <strong>in</strong> March 1962 Mrs. Selma<br />

Re<strong>in</strong> was appo<strong>in</strong>ted as a member of a committee of four to arrange a<br />

list of <strong>in</strong>ternational contacts to be made by <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace.<br />

Mrs. Wilson. She couldn't have been so because nobody was ever<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Just a moment.<br />

Mrs. Wilson, Excuse me.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE, Included with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> group of four was <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

coord<strong>in</strong>ator of <strong>the</strong> New York group of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace, I<br />

want to <strong>in</strong>quire, if you will respond to <strong>the</strong> question, whe<strong>the</strong>r Mrs.<br />

Re<strong>in</strong> was appo<strong>in</strong>ted to a committee to arrange a list of <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

contacts to be made by <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace.<br />

Mrs. Wilson. Nobody has ever been appo<strong>in</strong>ted by anyone, you<br />

see, <strong>in</strong> our <strong>movement</strong>.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. I th<strong>in</strong>k it is important to make this <strong>in</strong>quiry because<br />

I spoke to you a moment ago of an article which appeared <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

March 28 issue of a Moscow publication anticipat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> contact with<br />

<strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace, or stat<strong>in</strong>g that one had been made.<br />

That particular article, to refer back to it and to refresh your<br />

recollection, was <strong>the</strong> Moscow-published New Times, dated March 28,<br />

1962, which declared that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Women</strong>'s International Democratic<br />

Federation, that is, a Moscow <strong>in</strong>ternational front, was sponsor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Women</strong>'s World Assembly <strong>for</strong> Disarmament, and <strong>the</strong> article stated<br />

that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Women</strong>'s International Democratic Federation had established<br />

contact with <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace <strong>for</strong> attendance at that<br />

Assembly. Indeed, you also testified <strong>in</strong> response to questions relat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to that, that this was <strong>the</strong> idea of your Wash<strong>in</strong>gton group.<br />

There<strong>for</strong>e, I am <strong>in</strong>quir<strong>in</strong>g whe<strong>the</strong>r Mrs. Selma Re<strong>in</strong>, who is a resident<br />

of Washmgton and who appears to have been active at your Wash<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

headquarters, was, <strong>in</strong> fact, appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton headquarters<br />

as a member of a committee to arrange <strong>in</strong>ternational contacts.<br />

Mrs. Wilson. WeU, you have asked me so many th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> one<br />

<strong>the</strong>re. First, <strong>the</strong>re was an <strong>in</strong>vitation I ga<strong>the</strong>r? I received an <strong>in</strong>vitation<br />

at my house. I presume that one was also sent to our Wash<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

office. I might expla<strong>in</strong> that <strong>the</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton office is manned<br />

by volunteers, who take it <strong>in</strong> turns to come <strong>in</strong> and out of that office<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir typewriters, a few hours <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon, or one day a<br />

week, or however it happens to fit <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir schedules, and so on, so<br />

it is quite possible that <strong>the</strong>re was a duplicate at <strong>the</strong> office. _ I know<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g about any one <strong>in</strong>dividual's connection with this th<strong>in</strong>g whatever.<br />

Mr. Nittle. Let me ask you this, Mrs. Wilson. Do you know<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r or not Mrs. Selma Re<strong>in</strong> established contact on behalf of your<br />

group with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Women</strong>'s International Democratic Federation <strong>in</strong><br />

Moscow?<br />

Mrs. Wilson. I can say emphatically that she could not have done<br />

so.<br />

Mr. Nittle. What makes you say that she could not have done so?<br />
