2116 COMMUNIST ACTIVITIES IN THE PEACE MOVEMENT<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. It was also reported at that meet<strong>in</strong>g that $18,974.91<br />

had been collected <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> stated purpose of conduct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> picket<strong>in</strong>g<br />

demonstration at <strong>the</strong> White House. Do you recall that report?<br />

Mrs. Neidenberg. I stand on <strong>the</strong> fifth amendment.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. Also at that meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n treasurer submitted her<br />

resignation, whereupon you, Elsie Neidenberg, and two o<strong>the</strong>r persons<br />

volunteered to serve as co-treasurers. Would you tell <strong>the</strong> committee<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r this <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation is correct?<br />

Mrs. Neidenberg. I decl<strong>in</strong>e to answer this and <strong>in</strong>voke my privilege<br />

of <strong>the</strong> fifth amendment.<br />

Mr. NiTTLE. WhUe you have served as co-treasurer, have any funds<br />

of <strong>the</strong> New York group been <strong>for</strong>warded <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> use of <strong>the</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

headquarters of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace?<br />

Mrs. Neidenberg. I must decl<strong>in</strong>e to answer this <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

reason.<br />

Mr. Nittle. Dur<strong>in</strong>g your tenure as co-treasurer, has any f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

report ever been rendered by your organization to <strong>the</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

headquarters of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace?<br />

Mrs. Neidenberg. S<strong>in</strong>ce I have laid no claim to any organization,<br />

I must aga<strong>in</strong> de'cl<strong>in</strong>e to answer this question and <strong>in</strong>voke my privilege<br />

of <strong>the</strong> fifth amendment.<br />

Mr. Nittle. Did you take part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> White House demonstrations<br />

<strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton on January 15, 1962?<br />

Mrs. Neidenberg. I decl<strong>in</strong>e to answer that <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> same reason.<br />

Mr. Nittle. It is <strong>the</strong> committee's <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation that approximately<br />

1,700 women participated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> White House demonstration on<br />

January 15, 1962. Approximately 1,450 of <strong>the</strong> 1,700 women arrived<br />

by tra<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Pennsylvania Railroad, and several women of your<br />

New York group visited various congressional offices dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

afternoon of that day. It appears that <strong>the</strong> vast majority of <strong>the</strong><br />

women who demonstrated be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> White House were from <strong>the</strong><br />

New York area ra<strong>the</strong>r than from <strong>the</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton area, which is <strong>the</strong><br />

headquarters of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace.<br />

Mrs. Neidenberg. May I just speak to Mr. Taylor?<br />

(Witness conferred with counsel.)<br />

Mrs. Neidenberg. I decl<strong>in</strong>e to answer <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> same reason.<br />

Mr. Nittle. Would you tell us how many fares were purchased by<br />

<strong>the</strong> New York group <strong>for</strong> transportation to <strong>the</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton demonstration?<br />

Mrs. Neidenberg. I refuse to answer <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> same reason.<br />

Mr. Nittle. Were not approximately 1,450 fares purchased from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pennsylvania Railroad?<br />

Mrs. Neidenberg. I decl<strong>in</strong>e to answer <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> stated reason.<br />

Mr. Nittle. Do you have any knowledge as to whe<strong>the</strong>r or not<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was any coord<strong>in</strong>ation on this occasion betw^een <strong>the</strong> New York<br />

group of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace and <strong>the</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton headquarters<br />

of <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace?<br />

Mrs. Neidenberg. I <strong>in</strong>voke <strong>the</strong> same privilege.<br />

Mr. Nittle. I hand you a copy of <strong>the</strong> organizational plan previously<br />

marked <strong>for</strong> identification as Posner Exhibit No. 1, titled<br />

"Structure <strong>for</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>Strike</strong> <strong>for</strong> Peace, Metropolitan N.Y. New<br />

Jersey Conn." You wUl note on page 3 of that exhibit <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

established certa<strong>in</strong> work committees, among which appears <strong>the</strong><br />

F<strong>in</strong>ance Committee, consist<strong>in</strong>g of a chairman pro tem and three
