In such a circumstance, we will observe an inverse relation between insider trading <strong>and</strong><br />

payperformance sensitivity but will be unsure about the direction of the causal relation. Our<br />

conclusions drawn from the current evidence is subject to the caveat of not considering the<br />

endogeneity of insider trading. We believe that the endogenous relation between insider<br />

trading <strong>and</strong> payperformance sensitivity is a topic deserving the attention of future research.<br />

8.2. Affect<br />

This section presents how differently writers in applied linguistics <strong>and</strong> business studies<br />

express emotions about things through the pattern A DJ PR EP N in academic discourse.<br />

Human emotion is interpreted as affect in attitude of appraisal theory. Affect<br />

particularly expresses the ways in which writers feel about people, things, activities or<br />

situations. Although the st<strong>and</strong>ard view of academic discourse is that it carefully avoids<br />

appealing to the emotions, my analysis finds that affect is sometimes inscribed in the pattern<br />

A DJ PR EP N.<br />

In more detail, my analysis finds that Affect is expressed by three semantic groups in<br />

the pattern A DJ about NOPTIMISM, ENTHUSIASM <strong>and</strong> NERVOUSNESS.<br />

As Figure 8.3 shows, the OPTIMISM/ENTHUSIASM groups <strong>and</strong> the NERVOUSNESS group in my<br />

data are distinguished by positive or negative emotions. The OPTIMISM group <strong>and</strong> the<br />

ENTHUSIASM group are also distinguished by whether feelings future or<br />
