<strong>and</strong> risk of exploitation.<br />

Employers should comply with codes prohibit<strong>in</strong>g forced labour <strong>and</strong> adopt<br />

formal statements conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g ethical pr<strong>in</strong>ciples that govern <strong>the</strong>ir conduct,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g an explicit commitment to <strong>the</strong> non-use of forced or compulsory<br />

labour. Such statements could apply to <strong>the</strong> whole supply cha<strong>in</strong>, ensur<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

recruitment is carried out <strong>in</strong> an ethical way throughout, free of deception<br />

<strong>and</strong> coercion. These provisions can be a condition for do<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess with<br />

suppliers <strong>and</strong> a reason to term<strong>in</strong>ate a contract with a non-compliant supplier. 21<br />

Employers should have <strong>the</strong> capacity to assess whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>ir enterprises, <strong>and</strong><br />

those of <strong>the</strong>ir suppliers, are free from forced labour. Such assessments can<br />

be carried out by conduct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terviews, <strong>in</strong>spections <strong>and</strong> audits to check on<br />

current practices. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of supervisors so that <strong>the</strong>y underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> issue<br />

of forced labour <strong>and</strong> traffick<strong>in</strong>g is beneficial for both bus<strong>in</strong>ess activities <strong>and</strong><br />

workers.<br />
