<strong>the</strong> Maghreb, particularly Tunisia <strong>and</strong> Morocco <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Arab countries,<br />
such as Egypt, Syria <strong>and</strong> Iraq. 112<br />
The nightclub scene across <strong>the</strong> region<br />
Even though prostitution is legally forbidden <strong>in</strong> most countries of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Middle</strong><br />
<strong>East</strong>, 113 <strong>the</strong> commercial sex <strong>in</strong>dustry employ<strong>in</strong>g foreign women is unofficially<br />
tolerated. 114 The characteristics of <strong>the</strong> enterta<strong>in</strong>ment <strong>in</strong>dustry vary widely<br />
across <strong>the</strong> region. In Lebanon, <strong>the</strong>re are super nightclubs, regular nightclubs<br />
<strong>and</strong> bars. 115 Only super nightclubs are allowed to recruit foreign “artists”. 116<br />
In <strong>the</strong> regular nightclubs <strong>and</strong> bars, mostly Lebanese <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Arab women<br />
are employed. Some 130 nightclubs operate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area between Jounieh <strong>and</strong><br />
Byblos to <strong>the</strong> north of Beirut <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Maamelte<strong>in</strong> area of Jounieh. 117 The<br />
artist visa scheme which governs <strong>the</strong> work of women <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> super nightclubs<br />
was established through an official decree <strong>in</strong> 1962. 118 The system applies to<br />
musicians, DJs <strong>and</strong> models as well as to <strong>the</strong> women work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> super<br />
nightclubs. 119 Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> GDGS, <strong>the</strong>re are around 60 super nightclubs,<br />
which employ women aged between 19 <strong>and</strong> 31 from Belarus, Moldova,<br />
Russia, Ukra<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> Uzbekistan, as well as Algeria, Morocco <strong>and</strong> Tunisia. 120<br />
These enterprises have been described <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> press as “not quite strip clubs, not<br />
quite bro<strong>the</strong>ls; super nightclubs represent <strong>the</strong> seedy underside of Lebanon’s<br />
famous night life… It’s understood that ‘artist’ is really just a euphemism for<br />
‘prostitute’.” 121<br />
An official from <strong>the</strong> artist department at <strong>the</strong> GDGS, <strong>in</strong>terviewed by <strong>the</strong><br />
research team, denied that super nightclubs are a cover for prostitution. He<br />
