Parents <strong>in</strong> <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>East</strong>ern countries are also <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial transactions<br />
with <strong>the</strong>ir daughters’ suitors, who accord<strong>in</strong>g to custom will pay a bride price.<br />
It is not clear whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>rs know that <strong>the</strong> husb<strong>and</strong>s will <strong>the</strong>n force<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir new wives <strong>in</strong>to commercial sexual exploitation. A journalist <strong>in</strong> Lebanon<br />
who carried out undercover work on <strong>the</strong> sex <strong>in</strong>dustry found that “<strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />
of <strong>the</strong> girl will receive between US$500 <strong>and</strong> US$1,000. The amount varies<br />
depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> age of <strong>the</strong> girl.” 157 In Jordan <strong>and</strong> Lebanon, <strong>the</strong> victims are<br />
primarily women from Syria, Egypt <strong>and</strong> Iraq, whose husb<strong>and</strong>s have taken<br />
<strong>the</strong>m to a neighbour<strong>in</strong>g Arab country <strong>and</strong> forced <strong>the</strong>m to work <strong>in</strong> nightclubs<br />
<strong>and</strong> bars or exploited <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> private apartments. The Lebanese ISF uncovered<br />
several cases <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g husb<strong>and</strong>s forc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir wives <strong>in</strong>to commercial sex<br />
work. In one <strong>in</strong>vestigation, a Syrian woman expla<strong>in</strong>ed that she had married a<br />
Syrian man who had taken her to an apartment <strong>in</strong> Jounieh, Lebanon, taken<br />
away her ID card, locked her up, <strong>and</strong> brought men to <strong>the</strong> apartment for<br />
sex. 158 Ano<strong>the</strong>r case <strong>in</strong>volved a Lebanese woman who sought protection from<br />
her former husb<strong>and</strong> who had beaten her <strong>and</strong> forced her <strong>in</strong>to prostitution. 159<br />
Heartl<strong>and</strong> Alliance also uncovered cases <strong>in</strong> which Iraqi women were deceived,<br />
threatened <strong>and</strong> sometimes kidnapped by prospective husb<strong>and</strong>s, who <strong>the</strong>n<br />
attempted to transport <strong>the</strong>m across <strong>in</strong>ternational boundaries to countries<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Syria, Iran <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE <strong>in</strong> order to exploit <strong>the</strong>m. 160<br />

“There are lots of cases of Iraqi <strong>and</strong> Syrian girls who arrive <strong>in</strong> Lebanon <strong>and</strong><br />
th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>y will have a great life here. After a few weeks, <strong>the</strong> husb<strong>and</strong> will tell<br />
his wife that <strong>the</strong>y do not have enough money to survive <strong>and</strong> that she must<br />
just go out once with ano<strong>the</strong>r man, just one time, to get a little money. He<br />
pushes her mentally <strong>and</strong> she f<strong>in</strong>ally accepts. Once she has had sex with one<br />
guy, she is stuck. The husb<strong>and</strong> will tell her, ‘If you don’t cont<strong>in</strong>ue, I will<br />
tell your parents <strong>in</strong> Syria that you are a prostitute <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y will kill you.’<br />
The girl can’t go back to her family, she is stuck <strong>and</strong> has to beg<strong>in</strong> prostitute<br />
herself. This man often has several wives.”<br />
