METHODOLOGY<br />
2.1. RESEARCH DESIGN<br />
In order to ga<strong>in</strong> a better underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> phenomenon of human<br />
traffick<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> ILO undertook between June 2011 <strong>and</strong> December 2012<br />
a regional research project to map <strong>the</strong> processes of traffick<strong>in</strong>g for labour<br />
exploitation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>East</strong>. Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE<br />
were selected as case studies for primary data collection, represent<strong>in</strong>g both<br />
<strong>the</strong> Mashreq <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gulf. Additional <strong>in</strong>formation was collected from key<br />
stakeholders <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region based <strong>in</strong> Bahra<strong>in</strong>, Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia <strong>and</strong><br />
Yemen, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> several o<strong>the</strong>r countries, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Bangladesh, Belgium,<br />
Egypt, Ethiopia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Switzerl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philipp<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
Data were collected through semi-structured <strong>in</strong>terviews with key stakeholders,<br />
<strong>and</strong> a questionnaire adm<strong>in</strong>istered to adult migrant workers <strong>and</strong> victims of<br />
traffick<strong>in</strong>g (both <strong>in</strong>dividually <strong>and</strong> with<strong>in</strong> focus groups) to document <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
experiences <strong>and</strong> vulnerabilities. 1 Tools were developed <strong>and</strong> subsequently<br />
reviewed by members of <strong>the</strong> Advisory Group, composed of specialists from<br />
<strong>the</strong> ILO <strong>and</strong> Heartl<strong>and</strong> Alliance. They were <strong>the</strong>n pilot tested <strong>and</strong> adapted<br />
<strong>in</strong> September 2011 with <strong>the</strong> technical support of a senior ILO researcher.<br />
Snowball sampl<strong>in</strong>g was used to identify migrant workers who would be<br />
1<br />
The questionnaire used dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terviews with migrant workers <strong>and</strong> victims of<br />
traffick<strong>in</strong>g sought to document <strong>the</strong>ir lives prior to leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir countries of orig<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
experience travell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g abroad, <strong>and</strong> any assistance <strong>the</strong>y may have received.<br />
This questionnaire was adm<strong>in</strong>istered only after <strong>the</strong> researchers had expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> nature<br />
of <strong>the</strong> project <strong>and</strong> emphasized <strong>the</strong> confidentiality of <strong>the</strong> process. The researchers also<br />
stressed that participation <strong>in</strong> this project was voluntary, <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviewee could<br />
skip questions or stop <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview altoge<strong>the</strong>r at any po<strong>in</strong>t. The development of<br />
<strong>the</strong> questionnaire led <strong>the</strong> researchers to realize that entirely different tools would be<br />
needed to <strong>in</strong>terview trafficked children. It was <strong>the</strong>refore decided to keep certa<strong>in</strong><br />
age-specific questions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> questionnaire, but to adm<strong>in</strong>ister it only to adults.<br />
