꿈의 항만도시 마산
Masan, a port city of dream
Masan is a beautiful marine city with dream
bay. It is becoming of a central city of Gyeongnam
by leading Korean society through
rapidly changing social situation since the
opening of a port in 1899.
Masan, the city of blue wave of the song
"Gagopa" and internationally known sculptor
Munshin. It produced many outstanding
artists and has the oldest city choir in Gyeongnam
which delivers the scent of art.
It also boasts Masan fish market lined with
fish shops and restaurants with fresh natural
raw fish.
Muhaksan Mountain
It has the name of Muhak(dancing crane) as
it resembles of a crane just about to open its
wings and ready to fly high. The mountain
was called Ducheoksan in the past. Having
Jubong Peak covered with pampas grass and
Seomajigi Field as center of the mountain, the
western part of the mountain faces Gwangryeosan
Mountain and presents steep slope
whereas the eastern part has a gradual slope,
which looks like it‘s open to Masan City. The
excellent sight presented at Hakbong Peak is
most distinguished during the spring when
azaleas cover all over the peak.
Dotseom Island Ocean Recreation Park
The name of the island, "Dot" means "Do-
Ya-Ji(pig)" and that is the reason why there
is a sculpture of a pig at the entrance to the
island. The Dotseom however, looks like a
turtle looking from far away unlike its name.
It portrays as if it is crawling to a land, and
by looking at it together with Mt. Muhak,
they resemble of a crane and turtle sitting
opposite of each other. Crane and turtle are
two of the ten symbols representing eternal
life, so Masan is often called as "Jangsujise
Bugongmyeongjicheo," which means that the
region is likely to last for a long time and gain
wealth and fame.
The 3.15 (March fifteenth) Cemetery
It was established on March 15, 1960 for
the spirits of the fallen patriots who fought
against the unfair election of corrupted and
long-term power plot of the former dictatorial
government of president Seung-man Lee. It
pays a tribute to a noble ideal which was a
blasting fuse for 3.15 Movement and inherits
the spirit of Masan citizens who admire freedom,
democracy and justice.
Munshin Art Gallery
In 1980, Munshin, a famous Korean sculptor
came back home after spending twenty years
in Paris and began the plan of building his
gallery with all efforts. Munshin Art Gallery
opened in 1994, which was the year celebrating
the 50 th anniversary of his life as an artist,
and after his death, his wife, Mrs. Sung-suk
Choi had been taken care of the gallery. The
gallery was donated to Masan city on June
2003, following Munshin‘s will to present his
gallery to his loved hometown.
