Columns by Categories
Columns by Categories is a variant of grouping columns, and is an option that appears when you
drag multiple columns to the Table. They are independent grouping columns sharing a common set of
values. When a set of grouping columns is used collectively as Columns by Categories, a
crosstabulation of the column names and the categories gathered from these columns is generated. Each
cell is defined by one of the columns and one of the categories. If Columns by Categories is defined
on the Column table, then the corresponding categories are automatically used to define the row table.
Columns by categories
For example, researchers collected data on the importance of self-reported factors in children’s
popularity. The top table in Figure 8.12 tabulates the percentage of the one to four ratings of each
category. It was made by adding Grades, Sports, Looks, and Money as Columns by Categories.
The bottom table in Figure 8.12 further breaks down the tabulation by demographic data.
