Durand Academy<br />
About <strong>the</strong> Academy<br />
Durand Academy will re-open <strong>in</strong><br />
September 2012 as an all-through<br />
Academy, offer<strong>in</strong>g children, parents<br />
and families <strong>the</strong> security of know<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that <strong>the</strong>y have a place <strong>in</strong> an<br />
outstand<strong>in</strong>g school all <strong>the</strong> way<br />
through to 18. From nursery age to<br />
adulthood Durand takes a consistent<br />
approach to teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
<strong>in</strong>still<strong>in</strong>g a culture of hard work and<br />
high expectations throughout <strong>the</strong><br />
Academy.<br />
Children at Durand have a unique<br />
opportunity, to progress through <strong>the</strong><br />
early years, junior and middle school<br />
<strong>in</strong> Stockwell and go on to attend<br />
a state-board<strong>in</strong>g upper school, set<br />
<strong>in</strong> beautiful, rural grounds <strong>in</strong> West<br />
Sussex <strong>in</strong> Year 9. They will board<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> week and return home at<br />
weekends. It is Durand’s aspiration<br />
that every child will complete <strong>the</strong> full<br />
journey, go<strong>in</strong>g on to experience an<br />
education equivalent to any<br />
<strong>in</strong>dependent school, funded by <strong>the</strong><br />
Durand Education Trust bursary<br />
scheme.<br />
The board<strong>in</strong>g element allows Durand<br />
to offer an rich and broad extended<br />
school day, structured to maximise<br />
opportunities for fur<strong>the</strong>r learn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
sports, music and creative pursuits<br />
that we believe all children should<br />
have access to. Once admitted to<br />
<strong>the</strong> school all children will board<br />
from year 9. Children will leave <strong>the</strong><br />
all-through Durand Academy as<br />
educated and skilled citizens with<br />
someth<strong>in</strong>g precious and valuable<br />
to give back to society.<br />
Pupils will be admitted at reception<br />
and <strong>the</strong>n after that by casual<br />
admissions. Consequently, <strong>the</strong><br />
Academy will not admit external<br />
applicants <strong>in</strong> Year 7 unless it is<br />
undersubscribed by pupils mov<strong>in</strong>g<br />
up from its own Year 6. Children <strong>in</strong><br />
Year 6 of <strong>the</strong> Primary School are<br />
entitled to transfer to <strong>the</strong> secondary<br />
school without apply<strong>in</strong>g fur<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
If fewer than 125 pupils <strong>in</strong>tend to<br />
transfer from Year 6, <strong>the</strong> Academy<br />
will admit up to <strong>the</strong> size of <strong>the</strong> Year<br />
7 group (i.e. 125) if sufficient<br />
applications are received.<br />
Any child who is currently on <strong>the</strong> roll<br />
of Durand Academy <strong>in</strong> year 6 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
2012/13 academic year, will not<br />
need to formally apply for a year 7<br />
place for September <strong>2013</strong> as <strong>the</strong>y<br />
will automatically transfer <strong>in</strong>to year 7.<br />
Any child who does not currently<br />
attend Durand Academy <strong>in</strong> year 6<br />
who would like to apply to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
Year 7 <strong>in</strong> <strong>2013</strong> should do so through<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir home borough via <strong>the</strong> London<br />
co-ord<strong>in</strong>ated admissions procedure<br />
for secondary transfer.<br />
