As the first parent promoted school in the UK, The Elmgreen School works particularly closely with families and the local community to ensure each child benefits from a challenging educational experience and is cared for and developed within a ‘harmonious environment where students from a wide range of religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds work together and respect each other’ Ofsted 2012. This is 'The Elmgreen Way' where students, families, staff and Governors are committed to the highest standards in everything that they do. The school’s creative curriculum has been developed to provide stimulating academic and vocational opportunities, meeting the needs of all students. Each student is encouraged to achieve personal success and fulfil their potential. Great importance is attached to pursuing skills and interests through a wide range of extension and extracurricular activities. Ambitions Students at The Elmgreen School are encouraged to become articulate young people filled with the confidence the school community and the wider community places in them. They are valued and respected so they, in turn, respect and value those around them. They achieve highly so that they are ‘well prepared for life in a modern and ethnically diverse society’. Students are given every opportunity to make informed choices and take advantage of an outstanding education, which will lead to a fulfilling adult life. Each individual has a sense of their own achievement together with a sense of belonging to a cohesive community. Learning All students benefit from a supportive primary/secondary transition programme and an enriching and accessible Key Stage 3 curriculum. Students are organised in tutor groups and class teaching groups designed to serve the needs of each young person, enabling them to learn at different rates and in different ways. The national curriculum is followed by all students with a strong emphasis on English, Maths and Science. This is complemented by a strong Humanities offer. All students benefit from excellent ICT, music and modern foreign language provision offering a breadth and depth of learning. The 14–19 curriculum offers a broad range of personalised pathways which enable maximum attainment. The school works in close partnership with a range of other schools to offer a rich experience for all our students. The progress of all students is closely monitored and tracked with regular and meaningful feedback to families. Particular support is given to those students who have specific learning or language needs. The Lambeth Secondary Hearing Support provision is also located at The Elmgreen School. Extending students through the school’s High Achieving, Highly Skilled programme is a priority in all curriculum areas. Students are encouraged to become independent 21st century learners through emphasis on personal programmes of study. Students have a strong voice in the life of their school and are encouraged to become active learners and citizens. Humanities, the chosen specialism of the school, offers students, families and the local community access to a range of exciting learning opportunities within the areas of English, history, geography, languages and global citizenship. Buildings The ethos and vision of The Elmgreen School is clear in its exceptional building, which opened in September 2009. The building provides an exciting, flexible learning environment with lecture spaces, amphitheatre, media and music suites, exceptional art and design workshops, outstanding sports facilities, high quality ICT throughout the school and an inspirational library and learning resource centre. Sixth Form The Elmgreen School will welcomed its first intake of students into the Sixth Form in September 2012. As part of the South London Sixth (SL6) collaboration, our close links enable us to offer an extended range of subjects and enrichment activities. Admissions criteria Criterion 1 Looked after children or previously looked after children. A looked after child is a child who is (a) in the care of a local authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions (as per section 22(1) of the Children Act 1989). A previously looked after child is a child who was adopted, or subject to a residence order, or special guardianship order, immediately following having been looked after. Applications made under this criterion must be accompanied by a letter from the relevant local authority. Criterion 2 Siblings. Children with a brother or sister who already attends the school, and who will not have left the school at the time of admission. As a result siblings in the nursery or Year 6 of a primary school, or Year 11 at a secondary school will not be regarded as a sibling under this criterion. A sibling is defined as a full/half/step brother or sister (who are living at the same address in all instances) or a child who is living as part of the family by reason of a court order, or a child who has been placed with foster carers at that address as a result of being looked after by the council.
