Depth before breadth<br />
We believe <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g more<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g time <strong>in</strong> English and<br />
Ma<strong>the</strong>matics <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early years so<br />
students can take on a broader<br />
range of subjects with confidence<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future. Our English and maths<br />
programmes provide extension<br />
classes for gifted and talented<br />
students as well as structured<br />
catch-up sessions for those who<br />
require it. At <strong>the</strong> same time, our<br />
curriculum emphasises <strong>the</strong> wider<br />
skills and knowledge of personal,<br />
social and moral education,<br />
humanities and languages.<br />
The academy also provides a<br />
range of <strong>in</strong>terventions to support<br />
students with particular learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
needs and we focus on personal,<br />
social development. We create<br />
opportunities for students to develop<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir leadership skills <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wider<br />
community and dur<strong>in</strong>g residential<br />
experiences.<br />
Academic goals<br />
Our <strong>14</strong>–19 curriculum offers<br />
a variety of academic and<br />
vocational programmes through to<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ations at 16+ and 18+. Our<br />
goal is to provide every student with<br />
<strong>the</strong> qualifications at 18+ to have<br />
<strong>the</strong> option of go<strong>in</strong>g to university or<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g a successful career path.<br />
Key Stage 4<br />
The academy's Key Stage 4<br />
programme offers a number of<br />
pathways to A Level and university<br />
and o<strong>the</strong>r vocational degrees.<br />
We have high expectations of<br />
our Year 10 and 11 students,<br />
who can choose to do <strong>the</strong> English<br />
Baccalaureate or a range of GCSE<br />
subjects and vocational courses.<br />
‘Value-added’ <strong>in</strong>itiatives<br />
We also offer several <strong>in</strong>itiatives from<br />
Year 7 onwards to encourage our<br />
students to achieve <strong>the</strong>ir highest<br />
level: university-based learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
programmes; an extensive Sports<br />
and Music programme with coaches<br />
and musicians; and week-long<br />
residential trips.<br />
Admissions criteria<br />
In <strong>the</strong> event of <strong>the</strong>re be<strong>in</strong>g more<br />
applications than spaces available,<br />
applications are considered aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
<strong>the</strong> criteria below. After <strong>the</strong> admission<br />
of students with Special Educational<br />
Needs, <strong>the</strong> criteria are applied <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g order:<br />
a) Children <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> care of <strong>the</strong> council.<br />
b) Children who have a sibl<strong>in</strong>g who<br />
already attends <strong>the</strong> academy and<br />
who will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to do so on <strong>the</strong><br />
date of admission (for this purpose<br />
`sibl<strong>in</strong>gs' means a whole, half or<br />
step-bro<strong>the</strong>r/sister resident at <strong>the</strong><br />
same address)<br />
c) Children who live closest to <strong>the</strong><br />
academy us<strong>in</strong>g a straight l<strong>in</strong>e<br />
measurement from <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong><br />
reception of <strong>the</strong> academy to <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong><br />
entrance to <strong>the</strong> child's home.<br />
Appeal arrangements<br />
Unsuccessful applicants have <strong>the</strong><br />
right to appeal aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> decision<br />
to an Independent Admissions<br />
Appeals Panel established under <strong>the</strong><br />
School Standards and Framework<br />
Act 1998. Independent appeals for<br />
this school are arranged by school<br />
