admissions procedure<br />
<strong>Secondary</strong> transfer is an<br />
important time and <strong>the</strong> aim of<br />
this booklet is to help<br />
parents/carers and children<br />
make <strong>the</strong> transition to secondary<br />
school. Please read this section<br />
carefully. It will provide <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>formation that you need to<br />
make considered judgements<br />
about which schools will best<br />
provide <strong>the</strong> academic and social<br />
environment that your child will<br />
need to make a success of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
ongo<strong>in</strong>g school career.<br />

Legislation and purpose<br />
The Education Act 2002 and <strong>the</strong><br />
School Admissions Code 2012<br />
provides a framework that seeks to<br />
ensure that on National Offer Day as<br />
many children as possible whose<br />
parents/carers have applied for a<br />
school place ‘on time’ receives an<br />
offer (if an offer can be made) at a<br />
school for which <strong>the</strong>y have<br />
expressed a preference.<br />
The procedure is not however<br />
able to guarantee that every<br />
child who has submitted an ‘on<br />
time’ application will receive <strong>the</strong><br />
offer of a school place at a<br />
preferred school.<br />
Decid<strong>in</strong>g which schools<br />
to apply for<br />
It is important to consider as<br />
much <strong>in</strong>formation as possible about<br />
<strong>the</strong> schools you wish to apply to.<br />
Check whe<strong>the</strong>r your child is likely<br />
to be offered a place based on<br />
<strong>the</strong> school’s published admissions<br />
criteria, which can be found on<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual school’s pages <strong>in</strong><br />
this booklet.<br />
You can f<strong>in</strong>d out <strong>in</strong>formation about<br />
schools by do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
• Read<strong>in</strong>g this booklet carefully and<br />
look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> admissions criteria<br />
for each school<br />
• Contact<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> school directly for<br />
a copy of <strong>the</strong>ir prospectus<br />
• Go<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> school’s open days<br />
or even<strong>in</strong>gs. Details of open days<br />
are listed on <strong>the</strong> school’s pages <strong>in</strong><br />
this booklet or available directly<br />
from <strong>the</strong> school<br />
• Talk<strong>in</strong>g to your child’s primary<br />
school headteacher, learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
mentor or class teacher<br />
• Read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> latest Ofsted report<br />
for <strong>the</strong> schools you are <strong>in</strong>terested<br />
