St Martin-in-the-Fields High School for Girls St. Martin-in-the-Fields School for Girls 155 Tulse Hill London SW2 3UP Headteacher Mrs Lesley Morrison, CBE BSc “This is an outstanding school where every child is valued to come to her or his full potential.” Ofsted June 2007 St Martin-in-the-Fields High School for Girls was established over three hundred years ago by our founding church in Trafalgar Square to provide an education for the girls of the parish. Merging tradition and innovation, the school continues to build on its spiritual foundations whilst embracing educational changes which directly benefit our pupils, such as gaining specialist technology and sports school status. The Christian ethos permeates the whole life of the school and drives the vision for the future forward. Pupils feel valued and express this as ‘being part of the St Martin’s family’. They are also aware of the high expectations placed on them to perform to their full potential from Year 7 to 13. We are proud of their continued achievements: our pupils consistently aim high and exceed their targets, gaining results well above the national average. The aim is to equip every pupil graduating from St Martin’s with the qualifications, skills and personal attributes necessary to meet the demands of an increasingly complex and challenging world. The extraordinary range of extracurricular activities enriches the educational experience of the pupils and provides stimulating opportunities for performance and individual expression. As one student put it, “There is something here for everyone.” At St Martin’s, we believe that a positive approach pays dividends. Excellent behaviour, regular attendance, sustained effort, significant progress and contribution to school life are all continually and publicly rewarded. Our focus at St Martin’s never wavers from educating the whole child – academically, socially and spiritually – and it is a formula that has proven highly successful over the years. In recognition of our ‘Outstanding’ status, St Martin’s was recently invited to become an Academy School and that was granted in April 2012. Admission criteria The Governing Body admits 140 girls into Year 7. We welcome applications from all members of the community and we ask all parents to respect the Christian ethos of our school and its importance to our community. Applicants will take standardized NFER aptitude tests and will be assigned to one of three ability bands (25% Band One, 50% Band Two and 25% Band Three). The Governors have designated 60% of places in each ability band as Foundation Places and 40% as Open Places. We are part of the locally agreed co-ordination scheme. Foundation places • The Governors have designated 60% of places in each ability band each year as Foundation Places to be offered to children of regular worshipping members of a Christian Church. • If there are more qualified applicants than places in any of the ability bands, places will be allocated according to the following criteria: 1. A looked after child, in the care of the Local Authority. 2. The parent(s) or carer(s) need to be regular worshipping members of a Christian Church. A reference will be required from the priest or minister of religion. Parent(s) or carer(s) will usually need to be attending Church at least once a fortnight and have been practising for at least three years. 3. The presence of a sister in the school (Years 7–11), who is living at the same address, as at September 2013. 4. Girls with an exceptional medical or social need. This must be supported by written evidence from a specialist health professional or social worker. 5. Girls whose parents have a particular wish for their daughter to be educated in an all-girls school. (If possible, a letter from the primary school Headteacher, a doctor or social worker should be sent with the Supplementary Form.) 6. The nearness of the home to the school. • If there are fewer qualified applicants for Foundation Places than places available in any of the ability bands, the unfilled places will become additional Open Places. Open places • The Governors have designated 40% of places in each ability band each year as Open Places to be offered to girls who do not qualify for Foundation Places, as their parents are not practising Christians, but have chosen the school for the type of education it provides. • Parents applying for an Open Place do so knowing that the school aims to provide an education based on Christian principles and therefore Governors expect that all pupils will take part in the Christian worship of the school and will attend Religious Education lessons. • If there are more qualified applicants than places in any of the ability bands, places will be allocated according to the following criteria: 1.
