He served as Governor <strong>of</strong> Portsmouth 1844-51.<br />

Lt.-Gen. Lord Frederick FitzClarence (9 December 1799–30 October 1854) was an illegitimate son<br />

<strong>of</strong> King William IV <strong>and</strong> his mistress, Dorothea Jordan<br />

On 19 May 1821, he married Lady Augusta Boyle, the eldest<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> the 4th Earl <strong>of</strong> Glasgow. They had two children:<br />

Augusta FitzClarence (1824–1865)<br />

William FitzClarence (b. & d. 1827)<br />

In 1851 Lord Frederick FitzClarence succeeded to the Colonelcy <strong>of</strong> the 36th Foot (2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment) on the<br />

death <strong>of</strong> Sir Roger Sheaffe, Bt. Lord FitzClarence was then Comm<strong>and</strong>er in Chief in Bombay. It was he who presented the piece <strong>of</strong><br />

the Peninsular Colour set in crystal on a silver plate which is still attached to the pike <strong>of</strong> the regimental colour.<br />

Major-General Lord Frederick Fitzclarence, comm<strong>and</strong>ing at Portsmouth, being desirous <strong>of</strong> improving the habits <strong>and</strong> the moral<br />

character <strong>of</strong> the soldiers <strong>of</strong> the garrison, intends giving them the advantage <strong>of</strong> a course <strong>of</strong> lectures on popular <strong>and</strong> instructive<br />

subjects. For this purpose he has engaged the Queen's Rooms, at Portsea.<br />

Etal St Mary the Virgin [Chruch]:<br />

Built by Lady Augusta FitzClarence in 1856-58 to the design <strong>of</strong> William Butterfield as a mortuary<br />

chapel in the grounds <strong>of</strong> Etal Manor. Her husb<strong>and</strong>, Lord Frederick FitzClarence (illegitimate son <strong>of</strong><br />

the Duke <strong>of</strong> Clarence, later King William IV) died in India in 1854. His body was brougth back to<br />

Engl<strong>and</strong>. He, his daughter, Lady Augusta, <strong>and</strong> Lord Frederick's ADC are buried in the side chapel.<br />

67. George Augustus, Lord Glenlyon, 6th Duke <strong>of</strong> Athole 1843-6<br />

George Augustus Frederick John Murray, 6th Duke <strong>of</strong> Atholl KT (20 September 1814–16 January 1864) was the son <strong>of</strong> James<br />

Murray, 1st Baron Glenlyon.<br />

On 29 October 1839, he married Anne Home-Drummond <strong>and</strong> they had one child:<br />

• John James Hugh Henry Stewart-Murray, 7th Duke <strong>of</strong> Atholl (1840–1917)<br />

He died in 1864, aged 49, from cancer <strong>of</strong> the neck.<br />
