77. The Honourable James Hozier, afterwards 2nd Lord Newl<strong>and</strong>s 1900-04<br />

James Henry Cecil Hozier, 2nd Baron Newl<strong>and</strong>s (4 April 1851–5 September 1929) was the son <strong>of</strong> William Hozier, 1st Baron<br />

Newl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

He was educated at Eton College <strong>and</strong> at Balliol College, Oxford. In 1880, he married Lady Mary Louisa Wellesley Cecil, a<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> the 3rd Marquess <strong>of</strong> Exeter.<br />

He served as a Third Secretary in the Diplomatic Service from 1876, as Diplomatic Secretary at the Constantinople Conference,<br />

1876-1877, <strong>and</strong> as Private Secretary to the Marquess <strong>of</strong> Salisbury while he was Secretary <strong>of</strong> State for Foreign Affairs from 1878-<br />

1880 <strong>and</strong> again as Prime Minister from 1885-1886.<br />

He then entered Parliament <strong>and</strong> sat as Conservative Member <strong>of</strong> Parliament for Lanarkshire South from 1886-1906. He was <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong><br />

Master Mason <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong> from 1899-1903 <strong>and</strong> was Brigadier <strong>of</strong> the Royal Company <strong>of</strong> Archers from 1910. He received the<br />

Freedom <strong>of</strong> the City <strong>of</strong> Glasgow in 1917.<br />

He died without issue <strong>and</strong> his title became extinct.<br />

Sir JAMES HENRY CECIL HOZIER. 2nd Baron Newl<strong>and</strong>s who was born on April 4th 1851 is the only<br />

son <strong>of</strong> the late William Wallace 1st Baron Newl<strong>and</strong>s , Vice-Lieutenant <strong>and</strong> Convener <strong>of</strong><br />

Lanarkshire,Chairman <strong>of</strong> the first Lanarkshire County Council J.P, <strong>and</strong> D.L. for Lanarkshire <strong>and</strong> for the<br />

County <strong>of</strong> the City <strong>of</strong> Glasgow, <strong>and</strong> J.P for Argyllshire, who died on January 30th 1906. By his wife ,<br />

Frances Anne , who died in 1891 daughter <strong>of</strong> John O'Hara , Esq: <strong>of</strong> Raheen by his wife Arabella , Lady<br />

O'Donel , daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir John Blake Bt; <strong>of</strong> Menlough Castle.<br />

The Late Lord Newl<strong>and</strong>s who served in the Scots Greys <strong>and</strong> several auxilary corps, was noted for his<br />

benefactions Inter alia he built equipped <strong>and</strong> partially endowed the Lady Hozier Convalescent Home at<br />

Lanark as a memorial to his late wife's memory <strong>and</strong> opened the Institution himself in 1893. His Lordship<br />

was created a Baronet on June 12th 1890, <strong>and</strong> was raised to the peerage on January 19th 1898.<br />

The present Lord Newl<strong>and</strong>s was educated at Eton, <strong>and</strong> at Balliol college , Oxford, which elected him an<br />

honorary Fellow in 1907.<br />

In 1886 Mr Hozier ( after having being defeated there in 1885 ) was elected Member for South Lanarkshire.<br />

In December 1890,the Lodge Room was moved to the Clydesdale Hotel, only to be again moved in August 1892, back to the Crown<br />

Hotel. At the insistence <strong>of</strong> Bro; James Hozier , MP; Provincial <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Lanarkshire Upperward, the new Lodge Room on<br />

this occasion would be concescrated by himself in a particular manner, <strong>and</strong> all expenses on the occasion would be met by him.<br />

The Ceremony was carried out on the 1st December 1892.<br />

Some 118 years after receiving its Charter from The <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Lodge <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong>, the freemasons in Carluke had their own premises .<br />

Opening ceremony ( 14th September 1912 )<br />

Owing to the fact that Lord Newl<strong>and</strong>s was indisposed, the ceremony <strong>of</strong> presenting him with an inscribed Gold Key as a Souvenir<br />

from the Lodge <strong>of</strong> the happy occasion, was carried out inside the building. In his reply to the Lodge, Lord Newl<strong>and</strong>s congratulated<br />

the Lodge on its achievements <strong>and</strong> the honour <strong>of</strong> naming the temple ' The Newl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>Masonic</strong> Temple '. As a little token <strong>of</strong> affection<br />

Lady Newl<strong>and</strong>s proposed to present to the Lodge, an oil painting <strong>of</strong> himself, painted when he was <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Master Mason <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong>.<br />
