Lt.-Col. Robert Edward Archibald Hamilton-Udney, 11th Lord Belhaven <strong>and</strong> Stenton CIE DL (8 April 1871–26 October 1950)<br />

was a Scottish representative peer <strong>and</strong> a soldier.<br />

On 15 November 1898, he married Kathleen Gonville Bromhead <strong>and</strong> they had two children:<br />

Hon. Julia Hamilton (1901–1971), married the 4th Baron Raglan <strong>and</strong> had issue.<br />

Robert Alex<strong>and</strong>er Benjamin Hamilton, 12th Lord Belhaven <strong>and</strong> Stenton (1903–1961)<br />

Kathleen died in 1935 <strong>and</strong> Hamilton married Sheila de Hauteville Pearson on 25 March 1938. They had two children:<br />

Dr. Hon. Victoria Edith Hamilton (b. 17 April 1941)<br />

Hamilton rose to the rank <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-Colonel in the service <strong>of</strong> the Indian Army <strong>and</strong> fought in the Chitral campaign in 1895, the<br />

Tirah campaign from 1897 to 1898 <strong>and</strong> the Mesopotamia campaign from 1915 <strong>and</strong> 1918, where he was mentioned in dispatches.<br />

In 1920 he succeeded his childless uncle as Lord Belhaven <strong>and</strong> Stenton. He was baptised as Robert Edward Hamilton but in<br />

1934, legally changed his name to Robert Edward Hamilton-Udney.<br />

Lt.-Col. Robert Edward Archibald Udney-Hamilton, 11th Lord Belhaven <strong>and</strong> Stenton was born on 8 April 1871. He was the son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Archibald William Hamilton <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth Ann Billyard. He married, firstly, Kathleen Gonville Bromhead, daughter <strong>of</strong> Colonel Sir<br />

Benjamin Parnell Bromhead, 4th Bt. <strong>and</strong> Hannah Smith, on 15 November 1898. He married, secondly, Sheila de Hauteville<br />

Pearson, daughter <strong>of</strong> Major Algernon George Pearson, on 25 March 1938. He died on 26 October 1950 at age 79.<br />

Lt.-Col. Robert Edward Archibald Udney-Hamilton, 11th Lord Belhaven <strong>and</strong> Stenton was baptised with the name <strong>of</strong> Robert<br />

Edward Hamilton. He fought in the Chitral Campaign in 1895, in the Relief Force. He fought in the British East Africa campaign in<br />

1896. He fought in the Tirah Campaign between 1897 <strong>and</strong> 1898. He held the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Representative Peer [<strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong>]. He gained<br />

the rank <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-Colonel in the service <strong>of</strong> the Indian Army. He held the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) <strong>of</strong> Lanarkshire. He<br />

was decorated with the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal. He fought in the Mesopotamia Campaign between 1915 <strong>and</strong> 1918, where he was<br />

mentioned in despatches. He was invested as a Companion, Order <strong>of</strong> the Indian Empire (C.I.E.) in 1918. He succeeded to the title<br />

<strong>of</strong> 11th Lord Belhaven <strong>and</strong> Stenton, co. Haddington [S., 1647] on 31 March 1918. He held the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Master <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Freemasons [<strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong>] between 1931 <strong>and</strong> 1933. He was invested as a Knight, Order <strong>of</strong> Charles XII <strong>of</strong> Sweden in 1933. On 1934 his<br />

name was legally changed to Robert Edward Udney-Hamilton.<br />

< Cairnbulg Castle is traditionally the seat <strong>of</strong> the Lords Saltoun, but sold by the<br />

10th Lord in 1666. The 19th Lord Saltoun bought it back in 1915.<br />
