Blairquhan Castle<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the finest Regency castles in <strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong>, Blairquhan Castle was built for Sir David Hunter Blair, 3rd Baronet in 1821 - 1824 on<br />

the site <strong>of</strong> a previous castle dating back to 1346. It was designed by the famous Scottish architect William Burn.<br />

Alex<strong>and</strong>er William Frederick Fraser, 19th [18th] Lord Saltoun (8 August 1851–19 June 1933), a Scottish representative peer,<br />

was the son <strong>of</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>er Fraser, 18th [17th] Lord Saltoun.<br />

On 7 July 1885, he married Mary Helena Grattan-Bellew <strong>and</strong> they had two children:<br />

• Alex<strong>and</strong>er Arthur Fraser, 20th Lord Saltoun (1886–1979) GM <strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong> 1933-35 - see below<br />

• Brigadier Hon. William Fraser (1890–?)<br />

Cairnbulg Castle<br />

By building Fraserburgh Castle the Laird bankrupted himself, <strong>and</strong> had to sell the Castle <strong>of</strong> Philorth<br />

which passed out <strong>of</strong> the family for over 300 years until the 19th Lord Saltoun bought it back in 1934.<br />

The castle st<strong>and</strong>s in over 300 acres <strong>of</strong> open woodl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> farml<strong>and</strong>, including a walled garden <strong>and</strong> two forest trails.<br />

There is archaeological evidence <strong>of</strong> an older square tower beneath the current construction.<br />
