Many <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Masters</strong> or close relatives had extensive collections <strong>of</strong> valuble works <strong>of</strong> art. Below is a<br />

small example <strong>of</strong> such a work which passed through the ownership <strong>of</strong> such persons. In this case the Madonna<br />

<strong>and</strong> Child “from the workshop <strong>of</strong> Bellini” [<strong>of</strong> which there were apparently many – see for example the inset at<br />

right] was in the h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Master’s family from 1844 to 1927.<br />
