In September 1892 Brother Major Robert King Stewart <strong>of</strong> Murdostoun, a member <strong>of</strong> No. 7, was installed as Provincial <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong><br />

Master <strong>of</strong> the Middle Ward. During his 38 years in <strong>of</strong>fice, 12 new Lodges were chartered <strong>and</strong> consecrated, including the revival <strong>of</strong><br />

Lodges 440 <strong>and</strong> 471 which had been dormant. In January 1902 he was installed as <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Junior Warden <strong>of</strong> <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Lodge <strong>and</strong> in<br />

November 1913 installed as M.W. <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Master Mason. He passed away in December 1930. His son, Captain John Christie<br />

Stewart, who was also a member <strong>of</strong> No. 7, was installed as Provincial <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Junior Deacon in April 1923 by his father <strong>and</strong> also<br />

progressed through the ranks <strong>and</strong> was installed as Provincial <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Lanarkshire Middle Ward on February 1931. Captain<br />

J.C. Stewart was M.W. <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Master 1942 -1945 <strong>and</strong> Provincial <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Master 1931 - 1966. The Stewart family father <strong>and</strong> son led<br />

the Province <strong>of</strong> the Middle Ward <strong>of</strong> Lanarkshire for 74 consecutive years. -<br />

Brig.-Gen. Sir Robert Gordon Gilmour, 1st Baronet [Baronet Gilmour <strong>of</strong> Liberton], previously Sir Robert Gordon Wolridge-<br />

Gordon, 1st Baronet (27 February 1857–24 June 1939) married Lady Susan Lygon (24 May 1870-28 Jan 1962), 2nd daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

the 6th Earl <strong>of</strong> Beauchamp on 19 October 1889. They had several children, including at least three daughters:<br />

• Margaret Gilmour<br />

• Grizel Gilmour (d. 1975), their third daughter who was wife since 1919 <strong>of</strong> Hon Arthur Oswald James Hope, who became<br />

2nd Baron Rankeillour (1897-1958) in 1949.<br />

He was also Gentleman Usher <strong>of</strong> the Green Rod, Usher to the Order <strong>of</strong> the Thistle, CB CVO DSO (1857-1939). [CB = Companion<br />

October 1889. Sir Robert Gordon Gilmour, 1st Bt, (1857-1939) was Captain <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Royal Archers (King's Body Guard for <strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong>). He served in the Zulu War (1879), the<br />

Gordon Relief Expedition (1884-1885), <strong>and</strong> was twice mentioned in despatches in the<br />

South African or Boer War, <strong>and</strong> twice again during World War I.<br />

Brother William Charles Little, eleventh [10th] Laird <strong>of</strong> Liberton, Advocate, was<br />

He was Depute Master <strong>of</strong> Lodge St. David during the years 1784-85-86. In 1787-88-89<br />

he was R. W. Master <strong>of</strong> the Roman Eagle Lodge, Edinburgh, No. 160, <strong>and</strong> in 1791 R.<br />

W. Master <strong>of</strong> Lodge Edinburgh St. Andrews, No. 48. His great-great-gr<strong>and</strong>son, Bro.<br />

in the Supreme Council 33rd Degree, <strong>and</strong> Past <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Sword-Bearer in the <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong><br />

Lodge <strong>of</strong> the Royal Order <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong>.<br />

1792; The succession devolved on William Charles Little <strong>of</strong> Liberton, great gr<strong>and</strong>son <strong>of</strong><br />

Sir Alex<strong>and</strong>er Gilmour <strong>and</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>son <strong>of</strong> Sir Alex<strong>and</strong>er's daughter Helen. He assumed<br />

< Craigmillar Castle Craig- moil- ard, signifying a high <strong>and</strong> bare rock, describing the site prior to the erection <strong>of</strong> the Castle. In 1884<br />

Walter James Little Gilmour spent a large sum in preserving <strong>and</strong> repairing the Castle which was rapidly going to decay.<br />
