The 11th Earl <strong>of</strong> Haddington was Comm<strong>and</strong>ant <strong>of</strong> the Lothians <strong>and</strong> Border Horse (1872-88) <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Lothians <strong>and</strong> Berwickshire Regiment <strong>of</strong> Yeomanry Cavalry (1888-1894). He was Honorary Colonel <strong>of</strong><br />

the L.B.R.Y.C. from 1894. He was Governor <strong>of</strong> the Bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong> (1863-70) <strong>and</strong> <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Master <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> Lodge <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong> (1892-1893). The contents <strong>of</strong> Lord Haddington's seat, Tyninghame<br />

House in East Lothian, was sold by Sotheby's in 1987<br />

George’s aunt, Elizabeth or Eliza Baillie (1803-1861), married (1821 at Mellerstein), John Campbell<br />

(1796-1862), 2nd Marquis Breadalbane, GM <strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong></strong> 1824-26 [above].<br />

He took the name Dalrymple <strong>and</strong> was created 1st Bart <strong>of</strong> Newhailes<br />

Charles Dalrymple, Esq. (b. l839; suc. 1849), Conservative M. P- for Buteshire since 1868, holds 175 acres in Edinburghshire, 1698<br />

in Haddingtonshire, <strong>and</strong> 33 in Buteshire, valued at £5410 per annum.—Ord. Sur., sh. 32, 1857.<br />

It was built around 1885 by Sir Edward Hunter Blair, 4th Baronet, [father <strong>of</strong> Alice Mary Blair] <strong>and</strong> has a most beautiful situation<br />

overlooking the Water <strong>of</strong> Girvan. A short walk along the river is the attractive village <strong>of</strong> Straiton, the prettiest in Ayrshire.<br />
