have been accruing, <strong>and</strong> Charles Hamilton Gordon was the son <strong>of</strong> Sir William Gordon, the originator <strong>of</strong> the bond.<br />
At this point another figure appears in the story, one James Petrie. According to Kenneth Gordon's memorial <strong>of</strong> 25 June 1750, 'That<br />
James Petrie, writer in Aberdeen, having formed a project to himself to get possession <strong>of</strong> the memorialist's Estate <strong>of</strong> Cluny which<br />
was encumbered with debts to the extent <strong>of</strong> 20,000 marks. In 1750 James Petrie had bought up the debts on the estate <strong>and</strong><br />
persuaded Charles Hamilton Gordon to dispose Sir William's bond to Jean Jamieson, daughter <strong>of</strong> James Jamieson <strong>of</strong> Balmuir. It<br />
was the process against himself at the instance <strong>of</strong> this Jean Jamieson that had been the cause <strong>of</strong> Kenneth Gordon's two memorials.<br />

James Forbes, 16th Baron Forbes was born before 1745. He was the son <strong>of</strong> James Forbes, 15th Lord Forbes <strong>and</strong> Mary Forbes.<br />
He married Catherine Innes, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Robert Innes, 6th Bt., in January 1760. He died on 29 July 1804.<br />
James Forbes, 16th Baron Forbes gained the title <strong>of</strong> 16th Baron Forbes.<br />

Alex<strong>and</strong>er Stewart, 6th Earl <strong>of</strong> Galloway (c. 1694–24 September 1773) was the son <strong>of</strong> James Stewart, 5th Earl <strong>of</strong> Galloway.<br />

The l<strong>and</strong>s were bare <strong>of</strong> trees when, in 1745, the building <strong>of</strong> Galloway House was commenced by Lord Garlies, who became 6th Earl<br />
<strong>of</strong> Galloway. The house was built for £2,000 <strong>and</strong> he planted 200,000 trees per annum on the estate. As a noted agricultural<br />
improver, he opted for larger farms,which he <strong>of</strong>ten took over at the end <strong>of</strong> a lease <strong>and</strong> re-let them at a much higher rent. When he<br />
bought Baldoon, an estate <strong>of</strong> 28 farms, from the Earl <strong>of</strong> Selkirk on terms that proved crippling, he owned half <strong>of</strong> Wigtownshire.<br />
