Professor Ewing was educated at Daniel
Stewart's College, Edinburgh, being Dux of
the School in 1930.
He graduated from the University of
Edinburgh in 1935, obtaining the Cunningham
Medal in Anatomy, the Mouat Prize
for the Practice of Physic, the Leslie Gold
Medal and the Ettles Scholarship for the
first graduate of the year.
He held appointments successively with
the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, Leicester
Royal Infirmary and the University of Edinburgh.
He obtained his F.R.C.S. (Edinburgh)
in 1939. For the first year of the war he
was Clinical Tutor in the Royal Infirmary,
Edinburgh and then volunteered for the
Royal Navy in which he served from October
1940 till Dedember 1945, to the rank
of Surgeon Lieutenant Commander in Combined
Operations afloat and at the Royal
Naval Hospital in Malta.
In 1946 he obtained his F.R.C.S. (England)
and became Assistant Surgeon to the
Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow. In 1947 he
joined Professor Aird's unit as senior Lecturer
at the Postgraduate Medical School of
London.
In 1947 he was able to spend three
months visiting surgical units in the Scandinavian
countries under the Paterson
Travelling Scholarship award.
Again in 1950 for the period of one year
he was able to take up a British American
Exchange Fellowship and spent most of the
time working in the Head and Neck Service
of the Memorial Cancer Centre in New York.
During this year he was awarded a
Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College
of Surgeons of England.
In 1955 he was appointed the first Professor
of Surgery in Melbourne and this year
(1958) we have pleasure in welcoming him
as President of the Medical Students'
Society.
On the recreational side, since taking up
residence in his own home in Melbourne,
Professor Ewing has been able to give full
vent to his keenness for gardening and on
the rare occasions when he has been able
to get right away has found a very special
spot for fishing.
