SPECULUM 55
who tries to conduct his life on the foundation
of, "Do unto others as you would that
they should do to you"!
It is a basic fact that man possesses a
spirit as well as a body, and it is this "whole
man" that every doctor is called upon to
treat. And so every practitioner would do
well to cultivate this aspect of medicine
very early in his professional life and try
to build on this foundation.
The role of faith, spiritual comfort and
a philosophy of life is very important in
helping one's own patients to "cope" with
their own illnesses, in which, indeed, the
mind plays so large a part. The practice of
medicine is incomplete if spiritual and
moral factors are ignored.
I have enjoyed each section of this admirable
little book, especially Chapter 111,
which deals with "The satisfactions of a
Family Doctor"!
I thoroughly recommend its inclusion in
any medical library.
ANOTHER SPECULUM!
The Editor has received copies of another
medical students' magazine called Speculum
—the magazine of College of Medicine at
Syracuse, New York State.
It appears three times a year in editions
of twenty pages or so printed by a zinc plate
process. (This is a process by which the
whole page is typewritten first and then
photographed and etched onto a zinc plate
—it has the advantage of cheapness and the
well-known Lange Medical Publications are
set up by this process). The editors are to
be congratulated on the very high artistic
standards of the magazine—cover, layout
and illustrations—a standard which our
magazine has never reached.
The subject matter is more serious and
staid than ours—perhaps reflecting the
higher average age of the U.S. medical
student. The levity and irreverence of
Spicula in particular is lacking, and what
humour there is is more gentle.
Melbourne can claim priority to the name
by some sixty-five years or more as the
origins of the New York Speculum are a bit
uncertain, though it seems to have been
irregularly in print for the last five or six
years.
THE REFLEX
Speculum is glad to receive the first issue
of The Reflex, a brother magazine from the
new West Australian Medical School. It
says much for the hopeful and spirited start
of the school that in its first year, when it
consists only of a final year and a first year,
these two can collaborate to produce a
magazine of great readability.
The articles are by staff and students on
technical and non-technical subjects, and it
also contains reports of the year's activities
of their Medical Students' Society.
This magazine follows the Australian
tradition of humour.
Marriage — a pipe dream ?
The bad man wants his women to be like
cigarettes — slender and trim, to be selected
without much thought, set aflame, and discarded
when burnt out.
The fastidious man wants his woman to
be like a cigar — more expensive, have a
better appearance, and last longer. If the
brand is good, they are seldom discarded.
The good man wants his woman like his
pipe — something he becomes attached to,
knocks gently but lovingly, fondles when in
dreamy and sentimental mood, and looks
after with great care.
A man gives you a cigarette, offers you
a cigar, but he never shares his pipe.
