FIRST YEAR
Who are we? What are we? (Don't
answer that!).
Well, there are 186 of us — now that
Jan has whizzed off in search of pure science
— or scientists?
Twenty six of us are of the long-haired
(XX) variety.
The remaining 160 are of the short haired
(XY) variety (from Bob's Brynner-like crewcut
to Peter's regularly recurring long bob).
How old are we? To be exact, our
average age is 21.1 years.
The range is from 18 years to 40 years
and here is the breakdown —

Where are we from? Most of us are
Victorians (173) and 10 are from Malaya,
2 from Tasmania and one from Hong Kong.
Some of us have already jousted and won
in the battle for academic spurs. We have
three B.D.Sc's, two B.Sc's, two Dip.Pharm.'s
an M.Ag.Sc., a B.A., Dip.Ed., a B.Com .,
Dip.Ed., a B.A., a B.Arch., and two 2nd
year B.Sc.'s who will qualify when they
complete Div. 1. In addition, three of us
are ex-servicemen.
In fact, just to complete the picture, this
is what we are —
154 who passed Pre-Med. last year.
16 who are repeating the year.
2 who passed 2nd year Science last year
in the combined Science-Medicine
course.
6 graduates in some branch of Science.
8 who were not admitted to Pre-Med.
quota last year but who successfully
completed first year B. Sc.
Strictly entre-nous, a high official source
remarked of us: "a very select group".
What have. we been up to, apart from
preparing for November?
The Med. Monsters, trying their hands
(and feet, claws, teeth and hair too) at
Carlton rules footer cleaned up the Fizzios
nicely, though the official result gave a misleading
impression to the contrary. In
announcing her XX variety side, Mary
(veteran Van Diemen's Land full-back) had
said supporters were very much needed.
(Very sensible idea.)
Brian ("The Hair-cut") Roet, your
favorite sports commentator, reports: "This
year Med. bettered last year's performance
greatly (only because no team was
fielded last year).
"The team selection was made by placing
a list in the dissecting room with NAME
and POSITION of footballer to be filled
in by volunteers. A noted volunteer was
FOO and his position was SIDEWAYS.
