This article is one of a series on various aspects of family planning. In our last issue "Goblin" covered briefly the history of con-. traceptive methods, and we hope to include in our next issue a discussion on recent advances in birth-control, especially the muchpublicised oral contraceptives.—Sub-Editor. This article deals solely with a few of the more common mechanical and chemical contraceptive devices locally available to the public. It is often said that the medical profession knows of a 100 per cent. perfect contraceptive method which it will not divulge. This, of course, is quite incorrect, and statements of this nature stem from the fact that manufacturers and distributors of these products are legally not allowed to advertise to any extent. A few advertisements are seen in pharmaceutical and medical literature, but these do not reach the general public. Contraceptive literature comes under the Obscene Literature Act, and except when addressed to a doctor or chemist, it can not be posted. When the manufacturing drug houses obtain overseas apparatus or literature the parcel must be addressed to a medical practitioner, as a "front", from whom it is collected by the distributors. There are some mail-order chemists who do a very good trade by posting contraceptives every few weeks, under a plain wrapper, to families using them, but even this is illegal. Chemists who stock these goods, and about 95 per cent. of chemists do, must keep them out of sight of the public in a drawer, and they are not even allowed to leave them on a shelf which is visible to the customer. About two years ago a Melbourne chemist was fined twenty-five pounds for placing a few unopened packets of contraceptive jelly in a window display. The best known contraceptive device is the condom or French letter, and is a rubber sheath which is placed on the penis. On ejaculation, the semen collects in a small bulb on the distal end. It is often recommend by medical practitioners especially when used in conjunction with a spermicidal jelly, as it has a high percentage of success. To quote Norman Haire, ". . . when used by intelligent people it is very efficacious . . ." These days, condoms are manufactured very scientifically and are pre-tested either by air pressure or by automatic electronic means. (Two electrodes are inserted into an electrolyte bath, one electrode is covered with the insulating condom, if no current passes, it is presumed to be safe, if a current passes the condom is automatically rejected.) Aesthetically, condoms are not very good as much of the tactile sensation is lost, and for this reason, even when pregnancy is contra-indicated, many husbands are not keen on using them for any length of time. Also, many couples complain of difficulty in reaching an orgasm because of the interplaced latex membrane.
