Coal & Allied – Hunter Valley Operations Table 6: Actions Required After Annual Environmental Inspection Issue Action Required Due Coal & Allied Action DII 1 HVO South consolidated consent Consolidation will replace many previous approvals in Table 1. The consolidated consent conditions are to be recorded as annexure to the next AEMR. Next AEMR See Appendix 16. 2 Hydrocarbon containment and contamination management Management initiatives are acknowledged: New double skin tanks installed in pit; Register, recording of contaminated sites and clean up; and Hydrocarbon bioremediation farm site inspected. Records and test results are to be maintained for Mine Closure Plan assurance. Ongoing See section 3.17 Hydrocarbon Contamination. See section 5.4.5 Decommissioning Closure Plans and Schedules. 3 HVO MOP status MOP’s are due to expire in 2009/2010. A consolidated South MOP (Lemington, Cheshunt, and Riverview) is to be drafted for DII review in quarter 3. A separate Newdell MOP is to be drafted for DII review in quarter 4. A consolidated Hunter Valley – Carrington MOP (including North Pit Tailings Strategy, and Carrington Final Void Management Plan) is to be drafted for DII review in quarter 4 2010. Q3 2009 through Q1 2010 South MOP Pending Approval. Newdell MOP submission delay approved by DII. Newdell is not an active mine and therefore MOP is not of high importance. Coal & Allied – Hunter Valley Operations Issue Action Required Due Coal & Allied Action DII 4 Rehabilitation Initiatives DII acknowledges a rehabilitation shortfall in 2008/2009 against MOP commitments due to changed mining at Carrington and South mines. This is to be addressed in new MOP’s – see 3 above. Notwithstanding, this shortfall is in part offset by other rehabilitation programme initiatives in the AEMR: 2010 New HVO South MOP outlines that rehabilitation will overtake disturbance in the future. Maintenance, weed management, aerial fertiliser/seeding in 2009; Native Seed Strategy, revegetation monitoring, native seed collection & application; Red Gum remnant protection and research; and Capping and rehabilitation of available tailings emplacements (Howick, Lemington, Western). Total disturbed area will decrease from 1559.7ha at the start of the MOP to 1069.5ha at the end of the MOP. Rehabilitated area will increase from 588.4ha at the start of the MOP to 1309.5ha at the end of the MOP. 5 Lemington South pit status Inspection of Lemington South Pit indicates; Maintenance requirements of rehabilitated areas – weed infestation, erosion (S5.4.4); and Revegetation - while some revegetation of unshaped emplacement areas is naturally occurring, a further strategy of temporary seeding of disturbed areas is required to stabilise for dust control. By spring 2009 Inspection by HVO Environmental and Rehabilitation Specialists found the area to be crusty and producing little dust. As such it was determined that disruption to the area to attempt seeding would encourage production of dust. The area will continue to be monitored in the Annual Rehabilitation Audit and any maintenance and seeding will be undertaken when deemed necessary. AEMR 2009 26
