Grasslands National Park is Canada’s first and largest
preserve of prairie parkland. The West Block, centering on
the Frenchman River Valley, is ideal for Front Country Hiking
on built paths or marked routes. You may see or hear the
rare Black-tailed Prairie Dog on your way! The East Block of
the park, near Wood Mountain and home to the Killdeer
Badlands, offers a challenge to even the most seasoned
hiker, backcountry camping, as well as stunning and
unexpected vistas.
Vacationers, something like armies, tend to travel on their
stomachs, so it’s fortunate there are so many culinary
choices in southwest Saskatchewan! Just a few of the
culinary delights are the Star Café & Grill, the Rockin’ Horse
Cookhouse & Bar and Redmond House B & B & Dining
Establishment in Maple Creek. The only commercial vineyard
on the prairies is the Cypress Hills Vineyard and Winery,
located just 20 km south of Maple Creek. The wine they
make from homegrown and imported grapes, plus
Saskatchewan berries and fruit, wins accolades and awards
The area around Maple Creek offers many attractive options
for day trippers or longer-term visitors, including a variety of
accommodations ranging from cabins at Willowbend
Campground or Eagle Valley Campground, to a Condo at
Cypress Park Resort Inn.
The Crossing Resort near Val Marie welcomes travelers with
tents, RV units, or camper vans, and can provide two
comfortable private suites. Rent a tipi for a truly unique
holiday experience, or bring along your horse and take
advantage of their “bed and bale” service. Or, also near Val
Marie is Rosefield Church Guest House B&B. This selfcontained
“little house on the prairie” is off the grid,
generating its own wind and solar energy.
Give yourself a treat and come visit the Cypress Hills/
Grasslands for an afternoon, a weekend or a full vacation.
You’ll find that your childhood dreams of “the old wild west”
really do exist -- and they’re waiting for you in southwest
