Kipling
“Preserving our past, aspiring
ipling was named for the great English author,
“KRudyard Kipling. The town was born of the great
migration of people from Europe and North America at the
turn of the century. The Canadian West offered free land. The
railways transported settlers coming in and products going
out. Settlers from many lands came together to build homes
and to form communities. Kipling became a trading centre
and a community when a mix of British, German, Hungarian,
and Scandinavian pioneers settled, built homes, schools,
churches, and worked together.
Kipling’s history is typical of many Saskatchewan local
histories. But each history is different, although the
environment, the hardships, and the challenges are much
alike. Kipling’s history is unique because so many major
strains, people from many different nations, came together,
accepted one another, worked together and built a thriving
community.” Quoted by Dr. John Archer (Kipling & District
History Book).
Kipling was incorporated September 11, 1909 and attained
town status on January 1, 1954. According to the health
region statistics, Kipling’s population covered by
Saskatchewan Health Care in June 2010 was 1,236. Kipling
also supports a sizeable trading area. The Town of Kipling is
a 1½ hour drive from the cities of Yorkton, Regina, Estevan
and Weyburn, located in the Rural Municipality of Kingsley
which borders with the RMs of Hazelwood, Silverwood, and
Chester.
Kipling is based on an agricultural economy of grain,
livestock and mixed farms, as well as an ever-increasingly
strong oil exploration and service sector. The livestock
industry boasts several large hog operations, which includes
two of the world’s leading companies conducting research
on swine genetics. Kipling has also become the centre for
health care and youth education in the area.
