Sunday of each December,
townspeople recreate the Victorian age,
with caroling urchins, Father Christmas,
and even Ebenezer Scrooge!
One of the area’s favorite summer
attractions can also be found in Carlyle:
the Prairie Dog Drive-In Theatre delights
locals and visitors from miles around, to
re-visit the golden days of drive-in
movies.
Weyburn is an excellent spot to learn a
lot about several fascinating facets of
Canadian history. “The roarin’ game” is
arguably the favourite winter sport of
small town Canadians, so you’ll find the
Turner Curling Museum both
entertaining and illuminating. Weyburn’s
Heritage Village is a replica of a prairie
community from the turn of the century
to the 1940s. The Soo Line Historical
Museum has many surprising artifacts,
including one of the largest silver
collections in the world.
National and provincial political icon
T.C. “Tommy” Douglas, the Father of
Medicare, spent much of his early life
as a Baptist minister in Weyburn. Now,
a life-size bronze statue of this
“Greatest Canadian” stands on the
city’s Riverfront Boardwalk. The church
in which he preached is now the
Tommy Douglas Centre.
Estevan is known as the Energy City,
site of two power stations producing
more than half the electricity used by
the province of Saskatchewan. Take a
tour of the Shand Power Station to see
how the excess heat it generates is
used to warm a greenhouse producing
millions of seedlings for conservation
projects. The Estevan Art Gallery &
Museum is a public facility dedicated to
developing and disseminating artistic,
cultural and historical achievements.
The Roche Percée Rock Formations are
perhaps the most dramatic and
intriguing attraction in the southeast
corner of Saskatchewan. These
unusual outcroppings, eroded by wind
and water, were once covered with
symbolic First Nations carvings and
later autographs of early European
explorers. South East Tours & Trails,
based in Bienfait, provides guided tours
of the area’s historical and natural
attractions, including sites of the NWMP
(North West Mounted Police), Boundary
Commission, First Nations/Metis, coal
mining history, and more.
At Cannington Manor Provincial Historic
Park, guides in period garb introduce
visitors to the days when the sons of
English gentry were sent to this
