Big Muddy
No trip to southern Saskatchewan is
complete without a visit to “The Big
Muddy”. This southern Saskatchewan
treasure, rich with history and
recreation opportunities, is located
midway between Alberta and Manitoba,
right against the Canadian/American
border.
This extraordinary and remote area,
part of ancient glacial channel, was
attractive to early ranchers and settlers.
Its rugged landscape also attracted
refugees like Sitting Bull, as well as
horse thieves, robbers, and
bootleggers.
Travelers have a wide range of options
for experiencing this unique region.
Wood Mountain Regional Park, situated
amid rolling hills in the heart of ranch
country, features the Old Post NWMP
site, Sitting Bull monument and other
amenities. Near LaFleche, Thompson
Lake Regional Park offers campsites
and facilities for swimming, boating,
fishing, golf, and family recreation.
In the Rockglen district, you’ll enjoy a
truly different vacation experience at the
Effie Mattson Memorial Nature Walk &
Archaeological Centre. Discover semiarid
plant species, native animals, First
Nations artifacts, a paleontological site,
and a regional diorama.
A variety of festivals and events
throughout the Big Muddy will also
provide out-of-the-ordinary vacation
experiences. Culture, heritage and
spirituality blend at the annual Summer
Solstice Festival d’eté in Gravelbourg
(June 22-24, 2012), where you can
experience a weekend of art, music,
dance, literature, drama, international
cuisine, children’s activities and
workshops. For a unique outdoor
musical experience, take in the 2nd
Annual Wood Mountain Folk Music
Festival (August 24-25, 2012) at the
Mergel Ranch Campgrounds.
Thousands of people gather in
Mortlach on the first Saturday in July
every year (July 7 in 2012) for the
Mortlach Saskatoon Berry Festival, with
great entertainment for the entire family,
special events, a parade, and of
