Wolseley
The Town Around
the Lake
Wolseley is an exceptional prairie
community. In 1902 the Canadian
Pacific Railway dammed up Wolf
Creek creating a man-made lake.
Through an underground pipe, water
from this lake was pumped to a tank
next to the railway tracks. The steam
locomotives using the water have long
since disappeared. Fairly Lake, as it is
now called, is one of our many unique,
picturesque features of the town.
Spanning this body of water is a 100
metre long Swinging Bridge. If you walk
across the bridge you will find another
treasure in our community, the oldest
existing Court House in Saskatchewan.
This court building was constructed
in 1895 and presently is the only one
surviving from the Territorial Government
days. On Blanchard Street we have
the Wolseley Museum. Attached to this
museum is the first Beaver Lumber
Office which had its beginnings in
Wolseley and its creator E.A. Banbury
formed his idea that launched an
enterprise in our community. His home
“the Banbury House” is one of our
town features and you can spend the
night as it was converted to a bed and
breakfast back in 1985.
The historic “gem” of the community
is the Town Hall / Opera House. Built
Opera House
Perley Block
in 1906 as a facility to house a library,
town office, council chambers, jail
cell, fire hall and opera house, it was
restored to its original glory in 1993.
It is now the community auditorium
for a variety of events from theatre
performances to weddings and dance
competitions.
Court House
Twilite Drive-In
There is more to Wolseley than its rich
heritage of buildings. It is a town that
enjoys significant sports programs,
multi-faceted cultural groups,
progressive businesses and industries.
All these add up to a very attractive
community for both residents and
visitors.
The Town of Wolseley invites you to our
community and to see our historic and
unique places.
