Great Sand Hills /
Southwestern Saskatchewan is a
land of the unexpected, with
remarkable contrasts at every turn.
Within easy driving distance, you can
go from vast expanses of prairie
grassland to gently rolling parkland
dotted with brush and trees, from busy
modern cities to friendly and welcoming
towns and villages, from breathtaking
expanses of sand dunes or hills to
incredibly beautiful river valleys and
some of the finest of this province’s
more than 100,000 lakes!
In Canada’s centennial year, 1967, the
massive earthen Gardiner Dam was
built across the South Saskatchewan
River to create Lake Diefenbaker, the
largest man-made lake in the province.
More than 800 km. of sandy shoreline
ensure many opportunities for
recreation on the water. World-class fish
have been pulled out of this popular
lake: many species of game fish are
just waiting for your hook!
Saskatchewan is home to some of the
best competitive fishing events in
Canada. Check out the annual Lake
Diefenbaker Walleye Classic, which is
held in May, and the Saskatchewan
Landing International, held in July.
Several other local fishing derbies are
organized throughout the year,
including ice-fishing events when the
lake freezes over.
Whether you’re fishing, sailing, speed
boating, jet skiing, windsurfing or
canoeing, you’ll find full-service marinas
at Saskatchewan Landing, Elbow and
Riverhurst for all your boating needs.
There are lots of dry-land opportunities
for relaxation as well. Near Aylesbury, in
the picturesque Arm River Valley, Trails
End Guest Ranch offers cowboy
adventures, trail and wagon rides,
hiking, and riding lessons, along with
modern air-conditioned motel-style
cabins.
The Chaplin Nature Centre, located on
the Trans-Canada Highway near the
town of Chaplin, is a world-class facility
showcasing more than 30 species of
shorebirds. The 2012 Chaplin Shorebird
Festival will take place June 8 & 9.
The Harbor Golf Club & Resort has an
18-hole championship course situated
on the bluffs overlooking scenic Lake
Diefenbaker at Elbow Harbor
Recreational Site. You’ll find another
7000 yards of championship golf at the
Saskatchewan Landing Golf Resort, 15
minutes south of Kyle, also offering
breathtaking views of Lake Diefenbaker
and the surrounding hills.
Sage View Golf Course, located in
Palliser Regional Park just a few
minutes west and south of Riverhurst,
is a beautiful 9-hole grass greens,
natural links-style course, playing
through the coulees alongside Lake
Diefenbaker. Sage View is a “must see
