Figure 3.14 shows a sketch <strong>of</strong> a turbogenerator layout.<br />

<strong>Stress</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong> working blades<br />

<strong>The</strong> turbine blades are the most stressed <strong>and</strong> critical parts <strong>of</strong><br />

a turbine unit. <strong>The</strong>y operate at high temperatures <strong>and</strong> experience<br />

high mechanical loads from centrifugal <strong>and</strong> gas-dynamic forces.<br />

Furthermore, the blades experience secondary stresses from the<br />

transiency <strong>of</strong> operating conditions with rapid time variation in the<br />

thermal condition ("thermal shock") <strong>and</strong> also from the mechanical<br />

vibrations <strong>of</strong> the blade foil (especially in the presence <strong>of</strong><br />

resonance).<br />

<strong>The</strong> determination <strong>of</strong> tensile stresses in<br />

blade foil from centrifugal forces<br />

Under the effect <strong>of</strong> centrifugal forces in the blade foil there<br />

will appear torsional, flexural, <strong>and</strong> tensile stresses, <strong>of</strong> which<br />

the basic stress is tensile stress.<br />
