At this stage <strong>of</strong> planning stress analysis is generally conducted<br />

as an elastic problem, which makes it possible to obtain comparatively<br />

simple relationships which are also convenient to use. Such a<br />

calculation is a verification. It does not exclude <strong>and</strong>, in some<br />

cases, requires a more detailed calculation using special methods<br />

which we shall not. discuss in this book because <strong>of</strong> space limitations.<br />

Plasticity reserve<br />

<strong>Stress</strong> analysis for parts consists <strong>of</strong> three stages.<br />

First stage - determining forces <strong>and</strong> moments acting on the<br />

part <strong>and</strong> its<br />

unsafe section.<br />

Seoond stage - calculation <strong>of</strong> stresses which occur in the<br />

part from the effect <strong>of</strong> forces <strong>and</strong> moments. This stage, as a rule,<br />

is the most difficult.<br />

Third stage - comparison <strong>of</strong> stress obtained with limiting<br />

stresses <strong>of</strong> the stress-strain diagram for the _material from which<br />

the part is made or with stress in similar designs which operate<br />

successfully.<br />

Let us clarify the terminology which we shall be using in<br />

<strong>The</strong> strength <strong>of</strong> a part is the ability <strong>of</strong> the pFirt to resist<br />

the loads acting on it. Strength is a function <strong>of</strong> many factors:<br />

temperature <strong>and</strong> length <strong>of</strong> operation, the character <strong>of</strong> stress variation,<br />

the shape <strong>of</strong> the part, its dimensions, surface condition, the<br />

design <strong>of</strong> Junction <strong>and</strong> couplings, the orientation <strong>of</strong> the fibers <strong>of</strong><br />

the metal <strong>and</strong> its structure, etc. <strong>The</strong> proper evaluation <strong>of</strong> the effect<br />

<strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> these factors on strength is one <strong>of</strong> the tasks <strong>of</strong><br />

calculation.<br />
