When we analyze the last decade, we<br />

see that the level of poverty in Azerbaijan<br />

reduced to 4% from 44%, budget revenues<br />

increased 16 times and agricultural production<br />

increased 3.3 times. Manat was listed<br />

among the 5 most valuable currencies of<br />

the world. Education expenditures increased<br />

4.5 times. Azerbaijan had been a<br />

country which borrows from other countries<br />

but it turned into a country which lends<br />

money to others. Foreign trade endorsement<br />

and industry production have increased<br />

6.6 times and 3 times respectively.<br />

Inflation receded to the single digit level.<br />

The non-oil sector grew 2.7 times. About<br />

USD 14 billion investments were made in<br />

the transportation sector of Azerbaijan in<br />

20<strong>13</strong>. The number of international airports<br />

was increased to 6. The income from railway<br />

transportation increased 2 times.<br />

Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan Pipeline became operational.<br />

Azerbaijani natural gas was transported<br />

to Turkish market for the first time.<br />

The foundation of the Trans Anatolian<br />

Natural Gas Pipeline connecting Turkey<br />

and Azerbaijan was laid. Natural gas<br />

imports from Russia ended and natural gas<br />

exports to Russia began. Oil revenues increased<br />

3 times and reached USD 78 billion.<br />

Natural gas revenues increased 5.6 times. 14<br />

new power plants were constructed and<br />

Azerbaijan became a country that exports<br />

electricity. The number of the ambassadors<br />

in foreign countries increased 3 times.<br />

Azerbaijan became the first country to be<br />

elected as a temporary member of UN<br />

Security Council among the Post-Soviet<br />

countries. In Azerbaijan, where military<br />

expenditures increased 23 times, defense<br />

industry was established.<br />

Turkey participated in the <strong>World</strong><br />

January 23-27 for the first time since the<br />

moderator crisis occurred in 2009. Another<br />

important issue of January was that the<br />

Assembly of Tajikistan approved the agreement<br />

prescribing the cooperation with<br />

NATO on cleaning the ground mines buried<br />

on the border of Afghanistan. And the<br />

International Think Tank EBES organized<br />

9th Eurasia Business and Economics<br />

Society Conference.<br />

The first communication satellite of<br />

Azerbaijan was launched in February.<br />

Therefore, Azerbaijan became the 11th<br />

country having its own satellite in the world.<br />

In this issue, we shared the agreement signed<br />

between Petlim, the affiliate of Petkim,<br />

and Dutch APM Terminal Company upon<br />

the operation of a container port facility to<br />

be constructed inside the Petkim Port. We<br />

also gave space for the agreement signed by<br />

Greece, Albania and Italy on the construction<br />

and management of the TAP project, the<br />

fourth Caspian Roundtable Meeting organized<br />

in Brussels, and also the presidential<br />

elections held in Armenia on February 18.<br />

Two competitors TAP and Nabucco submitted<br />

their bids to the consortium in May.<br />

Within this month, we gave place to the<br />

Karabakh issue and the problems faced in<br />

the region. Moreover, the panel titled<br />

“Frozen Conflict Areas in Caucasus and<br />

Karabakh” organized by Eurasia Institute<br />

and Caspian Strategy Institute was inclu-<br />
